Last Friday my SUV developed some electrical problems. It's 6 years old and the warranty is expired. It only has a little over 20,000 miles.I got it to the dealer Monday. They said it could cost $1,200.I talked to a friend,He's a retired mechanic. He ordered $150 worth of parts. They came in today. He had me back on the road in 2 hours. When I asked how much I owed for his labor he said....Nothing not a penny I'm just glad I could help....When he left I had tears in my eyes..My wife asked are you crying again.Yes I said. To think that some one is that much of a friend makes me emotional.I'm not ashamed that some times I have tears of joy in my eyes.

That is a good friend. It is outrageous how much dealers charge for labor.

As one human to another, we do what we do to help our fellow brothers and sisters in this thing called life. Great to have friends like that Larry. Oh, and nothing wrong with a good emotional cry here and there

Nothing wrong with a man who cries....,shows you have a heart. Think of something your friend would enjoy and give him a surprise. He’s a good friend and your a lucky person to have such a friend. I’d bet you would have done the same. This proves “ people still care “!!

As I get older, I get a bit more misty eyed than I ever thought possible...typically when seeing my grandkids and they tell me words that really hit my heart.
If I knew grandparenting was so cool, I would have bypassed raising kids....it is a hell of a lot better.
To larry's point, I have a buddy that worked in car dealerships, as a Christian, he could not stand seeing people hosed so bad...this ASE mechanic works out of his house, and I pay him cash...the same repairs in the dealership would probably result in plastic payments with monthly reminders.

I bought a good OTC scanner is has saved me a ton of money by not going to the stealership. First sign of transmission issues and it time to trade. Big dealerships have big overhead the tire and fix chains have young kids. I can screw my own stuff up and still come out on top spending money on new tools if needed.

I've had a lot of help along my way, and when it came time that payment was involved, I never squawked. The next guy that saves your life may be the very one you just paid. But again, I have had so much done for me in that way.
Brothers don't count, but I walked over to my twin brother one day at work: Dan, my car blew up. Sell me one of yours and I can pay a hundred a month. Had another car the next day. Life has been great.

That's a good friend you've got there. There are others out there too. I've found that out this week by the generosity of the folks here.
After next year I should be moving. I want to take a course on car mechanics so that I can troubleshoot and fix basic stuff without getting screwed over myself.
I can't believe what some places charge.

I know a certified BMW master mechanic. His stories will make your hair stand on end. He advises to avoid the dealerships and use them only as a last resort. I've saved myself a ton of jack working on the Prius myself after watching YouTube tutorials.

He will probably hit you up to help him move or something. By the third load of the day you'll really be crying. I've always told my kids there's no such thing as a free lunch.
I've cheaped out a few times with shops to save a few bucks and have found out the hard way. I just take it to the dealer. They've seen the problems before and if one guy doen't know another one will. I don't have time for some guy to practice on my car to save $20 bucks an hour.

So you wander through life without friends ? If your friend specializes in something and he offer's to help you out you wouldn't take it? I am in agreement nothing is free, but if someone helps me I offer to help them back. I work auto insurance and trust me a dealer is the last person I would bring my vehicle too.

I’m glad he was there for you Larry. I bet you have done a lot of good for people, and karma is just balancing the books.

Well, you may be right about that Dave; however, if anybody did a solid like that for me I'd be there with my F-150 long bed to help move as soon as the coffee was hot - No worries. Just kind of funny that way I guess. By all means continue to place your faith in dealerships - It's your money.

I haven't been able to cry over sad things since the Army- But I tear up all the time over Possitive things. In fact, I'm suspicious of any man who claims to never cry. They would likely be a sociopath.

They would likely be a sociopath. Most likely. I've been fortunate to find 2 honest auto mechanics in the same city/town. Both treat me like family and I try to do the same. Brought BBQ sauce from San Antonio for both after they had thoroughly checked my 18 year old S-10 truck. One of the mechanics has 5 S-10s and knows them from bumper to bumper. He does all my mechanical work. Couple of times he repaired what was necessary and refused to take any money for his time. Like I said...they are family to me. Having friends like Larry found is the best treasure anyone can have. The peace of mind when this old man hits the road, is something that can be only called peace...a truly great feeling.
