Thinking of making a pipe just for Lakelands. When you think of Lakelands, what shape comes to mind? Those of you Lakeland smokers, do you have a particular go-to pipe for them?

For Lakeland’s I use either a MM Country Gentleman Custom Cob nosewarmer or a MM Dagner Design Cob Poker Pipe, both designated to Lakeland blends. A sitter works well with Lakeland blends.......for a minute or two rest between puffs.

I think of mountains or hills when I think of lakeland... Not sure how that relates to pipes, but when it comes to lakeland tobaccos my only lakeland is my mark twain. So that's the pipe shape that comes to mind for me.

I use a bent billiard (made by Joe Mariner, who I guess is pretty under-the-radar but it was one of my dad's). I didn't have a particularly good reason other than, "that looks like it'll be my Lakeland pipe!" Even though Lakelands are all pretty strong, I don't see them as a particularly masculine smoke so I guess the curved aesthetic was a factor. And the deep bowl is good for flakes.

I use my Chacom Jurassic bent billiard. It was a new pipe when my first Lakeland blends showed up. I had heard about ghosting, so it got nominated to the position. I've yet to smoke a Lakeland in something other than that or a cob.

Any dedicated pipe will work but beware the ghost.

A natural finish straight legend from mm for the aromatics, anything else for the more natural flavored of the family. Fvf makes a good counterpoint to odf in an mm general.

Any dedicated pipe will work but beware the ghost. that's why I want to make one JUST for Lakelands. Maybe I'll attempt one of those crazy shaped blowfish type buggers. Maybe a nice nosewarmer pot of some sort.

Ghosts don't bother me. I smoke whatever I'm smoking in whatever pipe I happen to grab. If you just smoke one bowl through it it doesn't ghost too much.

Since Lakelands are from England, a traditional English briar would be fitting, most any shape would do.

I used to have a little group 3 Dunhill shell semi bent pot for Condor and St. Bruno.
Currently I have a couple GBDs for Coniston Cut Plug. A big virgin apple and a large French sandblast billiard both of which my dog chewed up the stems. Luckily a softy bit covers up some of the damage.
Coniston Cut Plug comes pretty moist but burns nicely in the larger pipes when dried out.
I would say if you are going to smoke a Lakeland in a briar make sure you like that blend first before comitting it to a pipe. But there aren't any rules if you want to try different lakelands in one pipe you just might get some funny combinations.

I'm wondering what those old men who inspired most of us would think about dedicating certain pipes to particular tobaccos. Just wondering.

I'm wondering what those old men who inspired most of us would think about dedicating certain pipes to particular tobaccos. Just wondering. Personally, I usually smoke whatever in whatever. BUT, I got an eBay pipe that was ghosted to death with Lakeland. I still smoke whatever in it, but I still taste the Lakeland. I haven't treated it, because I'm lazy. So, what goes in, is what comes out slightly Lakeland style. Or, did you mean, "what would those old guys think about the sheer amount of blends available today, that someone would even think to dedicate a pipe to a certain genre of tobacco"? I have a cob just for deer tongue blends. I guess having a deer tongue ghost with something else isn't bad. But, since I have the option, why not dedicate a pipe to it? To reply to your original wondering-ness, I think one look at SmokingPipes.com would blow their minds. Instant PAD and TAD.

I think my dad would say that it was unfortunate that the person was unable to locate their favorite tobacco blend. Back in the day, most men settled on one blend and stuck to it.

Any dedicated pipe will work but beware the ghost. I'm perfectly happy to have a little lakeland ghost in all of my regular rotation.

The only pipe ghost I really cannot abide is The Captain.
Shiver me timbers, smoking The Captain's ghoulish remnant out of used pipes makes me crazy.

He was a WWI vet, wore overalls and carried a can of Prince Albert, a cob and rolling papers in the upper pockets. I'm pretty sure I know what he would tell us; however, we have such a plethora from which to chose which he didn't.

I smoke anything in most anything and never worry about ghosting... i ain'ta fraid of no ghosts... matter o fact i like em. Pretty much the way I roll...I do have certain pipes that seem to go better with Virginia's, others that go better with English, in them cases, it is about the quality of the smoke delivered. After smoking a Lakeland, I can definitely get a few whiff's of taste into a bowl of say Virginia.....Smoking a heavy lat blend is like unleashing a ghosting hit squad in the bowl though. Although I don't have very sensative buds either.

A note on heavily ghosted pipes that come your way....
When my wife decided to pass on a used car because the prior owner was a cigarette smoker, the dealer offered to have a guy with an ozone generator rid the ghost of Joe Camel...I was skeptical, but it worked and we bought the car...occasionally under certain conditions we would get a whiff....but that camel ran out of my car.
Having ghosted estate pipes go through the ozone generator is a real game changer, even if you restore and or clean your own pipes, it only costs a few bucks to rid all the smoke and bacteria....
