On the first issue at a few pages in, someone scanned the page with a subscription insert covering an interesting article on prewar pipes... it looked like they might have rescanned it without the insert later... looking from my phone limits me.
Scanning down further talks about Bertram’s putting disabled vets to work making pipes in DC... pretty eager to see the articles, it looks like a lot of good stuff!

I got lost in all that and forgot I was logged in here--and didn't say thanks. So--thanks for posting that, Charlie.

Took a moment to skim over them and cannot wait to really get lost in this share.
Thank you!

Great article on Bing in the first issue...sucks that one of his most treasured pipes was stolen, it had the name BING in gold on the stem...I wonder if it is still out there.... This surprised me as I have never heard it mentioned when people talk about movies that have pipe smoking in them.

Thanks Charlie. I've not time to read them now but have downloaded them all. I was paging through that last issue, September 1947 and the article about smoke blending had an interesting twist "Asbestos partitions in an ordinary briar permit an easy smoke blending method." That explains a lot!

That explains a lot! Johns Manville probably regret selling to pipe manufacturers big time. IIRC, they were the big dog plaintiffs in the asbestos lawsuit. I don't know why, but when I saw this, I immediately thought of Jim.....I hear eggs frying.

This cracks me up...
From PipeLovers Jan 1946:
EVER THINK of the many changes that have taken place in the realm of pipe smoking?"
Grandpa tells of the old store-keeper who used to keep his tobacco in a barrel underneath the counter. A customer would come in and ask for a glimpse of his best grade, to which the storekeeper would respond with a handful from the trusty barrel.
One sniff and the customer would ask "How much?" and back would come the price, "Five cents a handful." "Nothin' better than that in the place?" queries the customer. "Waal, got some jes' came in, but I get 10c fer it," is the reply.
"Let's have a smell," and up comes a handful from the same barrel. "That's more like it. I'll take two handsful." And out of the store he would go with the best the storekeeper had.

Thanks for posting the link to Pipe Lovers, Charlie! Very interesting to read a pipe magazine published right after WWII.

Here's my favorite find so far. This guy didn't need to protect his pipe from the elements, he felt the need to protect his car from the pounding of his pipe!

Good stuff - I am loving all of the ads. It is nice to see some of the not so popular pipes these days with a full page ad back then. It was also nice to read about lestrout in the first issue and his 350 pipe collection. The sun visor pipe rack - brilliant!!

I was shocked to see the asbestos bowl spitter. You would put it in the middle of your bowl like a divider, and smoke two blends at once. OUCH!!

I was shocked to see the asbestos bowl spitter. You would put it in the middle of your bowl like a divider, and smoke two blends at once. OUCH!! Probably perfectly safe. As long as the asbestos isn't friable, it's all good.
(The main reason asbestos is held in such low esteem is occupational hazard, not risk to consumers...)

We had the same discussion at work, but it would still give me concern.
