Do they work on the same principle? Is one better than the other? I don't have either but am curious. The Sav system estates seems to sell for less than the regulars.

Man did you open a can of worms. I have both and like them; however, I went through a few Peterson system pipes before settling on my two pre-1964 312s when I thinned the entire herd. They smoke exactly as was intended; others, not so much. JMHO

So with the Peterson you have the usual quality control irregularities? I’m hoping Laudisi makes some changes to that.

The Savinelli system is an exact copy of the System Standard, but different from the System Deluxe. The WDC Wellington is a more advanced copy.

IMO the Sav works better in full bents becsuse of the balsa filter. By a System pipe from Germany and it will take the 9mm balsa filter.

Besides, I don't really buy pipes anymore since I started making them. I did make a monster bent that takes a 6mm balsa.

That is called the Steve System Pipe.... nice.
I have two Pete Systems, I have never smoked a Sav system, so I cannot compare. Like Mark, I found that my Pre Republic Peterson is definitely a better smoker than my newer manufactured estate Pete.

I prefer my Sav system over my Peterson. But I wouldn't say one smokes "better" than the other. They both smoke equally well.
Its one minor difference that sways me towards the Sav systems with a "p-lip".
The Sav stem has a square hole at the p-lip button. The Peterson's has a round one. The roomier square on the Sav makes a difference when cleaning.
With the larger square hole on the Sav the pipe cleaner goes through the entire stem without getting hung up. I have to fuss with the cleaner to get it to pass through the Pete's round hole.
Compare buttons from each "p-lip" side by side and the explanation above will be easier to understand. The Sav's is not as small.

Gratified you men like that pipe, truly. Yep, can stand a flake in it. It's favorite tobaccos are HH ODF and GH Kendall Kentucky, albeit the latter is about as far from a flake as you can get.

There is a caveat.. My Pre Republic Pete has a larger hole for the airway, quite better than the modern one. Joe Fabian from Laudisi will be at our pipe night this week, since they will be making the Petersons from now on, I am going to share this with him. The pipe cleaner goes through quite nicely, the newer one requires fiddling with...it can be done, but not as smoothly...and a better draw. I need to find my calipers before I go...

I have used 9mm filters that are full of crushed up meerschaum block. They work very well and were not very expensive if I remember right. Not sure if they are readily available now though.
