In my life I have only seen 4 pipe smokers outside of a tobacco shop.

Unless I'm asked not to or it's posted No Smoking, I smoke anywhere I want. I have a neighbor that lives one house down from me that smokes a pipe ( he smokes Carter Hall and has 4 Dr.Grabows that he's smoked for 60 years ) and he walks his little Scotty every night and smokes a pipe while they walk. There are two big Live Oak trees down the street from me and every other day one of the cops that patrols our neighborhood parks under them and has an afternoon smoke in a pipe. He 's strictly a GBD smoker and has been for the last 40 years and he's smoked Granger for almost as long. These are the only pipe smokers I've seen "outside" in a city of over 400,000 ! I'm sure there are others I just haven't run into them. Your story reminded me of a law enforcement encounter I had in 1968. Along with a couple of other "Long Hairs", we are setting up to camp on the beach just south of Mendocino, CA. Up rolls a Sheriff's cruiser and in the driver's window is an elderly Deputy Sheriff smoking a pipe. "You boys planning on spending the night?", asks he. "Well, just don't be here in the morning when I come back." Off he went. We moved on the next morning. He was the only LEO I recall who smoked a pipe.

I only rarely smoke a pipe when I'm in town on errands and such, but I always take a pipe along for the morning and evening dog walk through the neighborhoods. Even those around that don't know me by name recognize me as the "pipe smoking guy with the dog". I've never once had anyone complain, but this area used to be rich tobacco country. So, I think it's a more tobacco friendly place overall than some areas.
My job sometimes requires that I work on-site for various businesses. If it's going to be a long haul affair, I'll take along a pipe and some tobacco to smoke during a lunch (or breakfast if I have to start reeeeally early) break unless it's in an area where I can't really get out of the building or at decent distance away from the general public.
I know of four other gentlemen in my city that also enjoy a pipe, all from very different walks of life. I'm sure that there are more. I just haven't met them yet.

I can't remember seeing anyone smoking a pipe in years. I smoke my pipe when I drive and look for other pipe smokers. Never see any. My 21 year old son an a couple of his friends smoke a pipe. Not sure about the friends, but my son is a pretty serious pipe smoker. I'm not sure that it will last, but I suspect it might. Other than that I don't know any pipe smokers other than you all

As many of you know, I travel up and down the East Coast, pretty much every week, for work.
Sadly I must report that I have only seen one or two other folks smoking a pipe since April of this year.
But, whenever I have been smoking one of my pipes I have always received positive comments. Mostly from folks stating how much they like the aroma and how it reminds them of their father / grandfather.

I used to smoke on campus as I walked to and from classes. My university put a ban on all tobacco products on campus this year. All tobacco products, snuff, snus, dip. Everything that isn't FDA approved for nicotine cessation. Sucks. I did get some glares as I walked and smoked last year though. Not a lot of people friendly to tobacco here in Utah. I can understand the rationale behind banning smoking. You have people smoking in big crowds and a lot of people are getting second-hand smoke. Cigarette buts get thrown on the ground. I just want a few smoking areas around campus. Little areas out of peoples way so that if someone doesn't have to smell smoke they don't have to. Put ashtrays and garbage cans in the area so no litter. Most people don't take a nuanced approach to tobacco though. They say it's all bad and try to make decisions for people. They don't want to accept the reality that people smoke and if you ban it, it doesn't help the smokers just hurts them. You need to make something that works for nonsmokers and for smokers.

The lie about the dangers of secondhand smoke have been repeated so long, that it is now the truth.

If someone ever tells me I remind them of their Grandfather, I might lump them... with my pipe even.

If someone ever tells me I remind them of their Grandfather, I might lump them... with my pipe even. Yeah, there’s nothing like a beautiful young woman walking up to you, looking you straight in the eye, and saying “You remind me of my grandfather.” 😳😟

Went to Lowe’s Foods this morning to pick up a few items. I pulled up smoking one of my pipes puffing away, smoke billowing out of the drivers side window. To my left is a gentleman smoking a pipe while sitting in his SUV, he noticed me so I waved and said “ good morning “, absolutely no response from him.....very odd personality for a pipe smoker. When I returned to my car he was still parked in the same spot and looked towards me when I relit my pipe then looked away.....” an odd duck “!! I wouldn’t call it odd. I’m in my mid 50s and sit age wise on the dividing line between the older generation of pipe smokers and the younger generation of pipe smokers. The older generation, for the most part, just happily smoke their pipes. They don’t view it as a "hobby" or something to collect or feel a need to constantly try a new blend or build up a cellar or talk about pipes on the Internet or ... The Internet active pipe smoker/collector/hobbyist is actually a small minority among the older generation of pipe smokers. My father-in-law was the perfect example. He chain smoked his one pipe until it eventually burnt out from use and got another one with no thought to it other than keeping the cost down. He’d buy cheap tobacco by the pound. When the bag was almost gone, he’d go to the store and buy another one. So, I would not expect another random pipe smoker that I encounter to want to be friendly and discuss pipes just because they see me smoking one. While I do think that they should, I don’t expect it because us pipe hobbyists are really a minority of a minority. You have absolutely hit the nail on the head!
