Looks like a dragon's egg, cool piece of woodworking. But smoking that would make me feel like I look like a fool.

Why would someone put so much work into something so ugly?

Why would someone put so much work into something so ugly? beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I suppose. Beauty is also in the eye of the beerholder.

I am sure there is great craftsmanship there but not my cup of tea. I am not familiar with that carver but I am guessing at upwards of $400.00?

Very true, it would take a few pints for me to sit down and light up that pipe!! It’s more of a carved sculpture. PS What would have made this pipe more comfortable to smoke is if the maker bent the stem a bit more.....JMHO

I love the rustication and carving.
I'm not sure how I feel about that violet stain, though...

If I bought it I would smoke it, not sure I would buy it; too many other pipes to buy!

I actually love that. It makes me think of something in between a rare and fantastical mushroom, and a tropical flower. The shank - is that bamboo? - just enhances the feel. I think the word a designer would use is "organic".
I don't think I'd ever spend $1,400 on a pipe... Not that it's not a fair price for the craftsmanship and time that went into it, I just have too many other hobbies to spend money on and plenty of sub-$200 pipes that smoke wonderfully, so I'm good. ;-) But I really do like that, and you can be certain if I ever DID pay that kind of money for a pipe I'd smoke the hell out of it!

I would have no problem smoking the pipe in public. It would make a great conversation piece. So which snake species did you own?
