I received(free) a Jobey 355 Strombolli that needed some work. The chamber was in bad shape. It needed a lot of reaming and cleaning of the shank. After trying to clean the stem and not getting any where I decide to lol closer.
This stem is an 1/8 bent acrylic. The tenon screws into the pipe shank the pushes into the stem. The problem I found is the draft hole is smaller than normal. A pipe cleaner gets tightly compacted as it goes thru. To clean the stem I have to straighten a plastic coated paper clip and pass it though a couple of times the dip the pipe cleaner in alcohol (provided lube) to get the cleaner through. From what I can tell from pictures this is the original stem. Anyone else come across this?

Can you tell if the draught hole is filled with gunk or just poorly drilled?

This happened to me with a Radice, I re-drilled the draft hole to 5/32”.....this resolved the issue and now I smoke the pipe weekly.
PS Did you soak the stem in a strong isopropyl?

I use 91% for cleaning. The diameter of the pipe cleaner is about 1/2 of it normal size when it comes out it gets that compressed. There is some gunk in the draft hole, not as much as their was when I started. Looking at this stem re-drilling is not an option.

John, for heavy gunk removal in a draft hole I use a small jewelers rat tail file, they are tapered perfectly for resolving your issue. I purchased a set of jewelers files in a plastic case from Amazon for under $10.00 delivered a few years ago.

Not sure about the stem. It sounds like there's either gunk that's not coming out, or it was drilled, but possibly not funnelled correctly.
