I bought my first new pipe in years a couple of weeks ago - I'm so excited that I mentioned it in a couple of other threads. This got me thinking about break in techniques. Mine is simple:
1) Buy a pipe 2) Choose a tobacco, preferably burley 3) Smoke daily for 2 or 3 weeks 4) Give the shank and stem a good scrubbing and ream the bowl
After that it's ready to smoke. Any other ideas?

Personally, I clean the bowl with a half of a paper towel (split sheets) and a pipe cleaner after every smoke...probably anal but it is what I have done for many years and am not about to change now...keeps my pipes clean and smelling sweet. Other than what you have...I have no suggestions.
Enjoy your pipe and the tobacco you smoke...it is all you.

(can't be bothered with tearing em in half ;-P) Same result, have not had any of my pipes go sour. As for "break-in" tobacco? I use Carter Hall, as recommended by others here and on other forums. As a matter of fact, I'm on my 2nd bowl of Carter Hall this evening, as I am breaking in my two newest acquisitions.... ;-)

I also use a pipe cleaner dipped in cognac, and a few drops of cognac in the bowl before using a paper towel on it.

I just smoke them when I feel like, the same with all my pipes. Never had an issue, unbroken in pipes aren't that bad to smoke anyway unless it's lacquered or dipped. But I would never buy a pipe like that so it's a non issue.

Fill pipe, smoke pipe.
I tend to smoke a little on the hot side. When it's a new pipe I try to pay attention for the first few bowls and keep it cool. Other than that, a wipe out and a pipe cleaner after every bowl.

Put tobacco in it and smoke it. Just don't let it get too hot.
