When I got serious about this hobby about 10 years ago, conventional wisdom was that you need a charring light followed by the actual light. I have found this not to be true - I generally need two or three charring lights before I get a nice bed to light. It could be because I mostly smoke flakes, but I don't think so. You?

...if that works for you, keep on doing it. For me, the charring light has always been helpful... especially when loading a pipe for smoking at a later time...

As you inferred, it depends on the tobacco... dryer blends like Daughters and Ryan, it is off to the races from the first light sometimes.
Flakes can take more work, even when they have been dried.
Regardless of the blend, if it springs up after the first light, I tamp it to minimize rim crud.

Sometimes I would do 2 charring lights before the true light.
I can tell if I need to if the first attempt at the true light still makes the tobacco come to life and dance for me.
If that's the case, I need to calm those dancers down and try again.
I also find I'm good to go with the true light if, when I draw with the match above the tobacco and then exhale the smoke with the match still above the tobacco, a flame comes from the pipe itself... If that makes sense.

After the charring light I like to smoke the pipe for maybe five minutes, the give it a light tamp, and then relight. Usually this works very well for me.

I always do a charring light an then tamp an then a relight even if it's still burning. This way I get a even burn for the rest of the bowl. I smoke my pipes as close to going out as possible. A cool flavorful bowl each time. Not for everybody but 40+ years for me.
Thanks for listening.

It all depends on the blend for me. I find that with flakes I do often need 2-3 charring lights. Very recently I've found that a solid charring light is the key to making a bowl stay lit. I've scorched the tobacco a few times attempting to get a solid light. It's a fine line that is easy to cross.

I just keep lighting till its lit, and call the first or first several the charring light.

Whatever tobacco I’m smoking I give it a good first light, wait roughly 2 to 3 minutes and give it a tamp. One more relight usually works well for me and rarely needs another light. Unless I’m smoking an overly moist blend.

In my limited time , I have done a charr then tamper down and then a nice even light with a few fast puffs. Seems to be working well finally found out that a tamper is required if I keep on it will stay lit..

AJ Same as I do 'cept I don't clench ( full dentures don't this well ) so I'm forever putting the pipe down and have to re-lite as re'qd regardless of the blend or pippe. Tamping as re'qd per re-lites.
