I know that tastes are a personal thing and very from person to person due to tast buds or chemical make up. I am not much of an aromatic smoker. There is a casing that bugs me and almost caused an allergic reaction of sorts. I learned quickly that I love a good Virginia, burleys and VaPers and of course that wonderful latakia leaf. So back when Orlik dark strong Kentucky came out I had to try it. It is a quality blend but I just couldn't handle the taste of the dark fired Kentucky. I don't like the smell or taste of it. I relate what I am tasting to maybe black licorice or anise possibly? I can't exactly place what it is that I am tasting but unless it is very sparingly added to a blend I won't even bother trying it. Does anyone else have this experience whether it be dark fired Kentucky or another leaf or means of curing a leaf, something that you just can't enjoy? Just curious.

Orlik's DSK has an anise flavor added so that's not the dark fired leaf you're tasting. Same goes for Peter Heinrich's Dark Strong Flake. Without the toppings, dark fired has a strong, earthy, smoky flavor.

C&D'a Burley Flake #5 has some dark fired in it and occasionally I taste that anise flavor. Maybe its just in my head. I'd like to taste test pure dark fired unflavored. I hate to think I am missing out on something

I think it's just coincidence that the blends you have tried with Dark Fired happen to have some sort of casing on them. Anise is a common casing on Burley and Burley blends.
I would say that MacBaren Old Dark Fired is one of the better examples of Dark Fired leaf. You may want to give that a go.

GLP's Jack Knife Plug and Triple Play Plug are very good. I really like the offerings from G&H like Brown Bogie but those have a little Lakeland essence as well. Another idea is to just get some DFK blending leaf to try it straight and mixed with current favorites.

I was going to say just this! Give HH ODF a go for a more pure dark fired experience. It's a fine smoke!

And what is stranger is I really like the flavoring in a burley such as Hearth and Home Classic Burley Cake. I may just have to try some bulk dark fired leaf to sort out my taste buds. There is always work to be done and taste tests to be had. One of the great joys of pipe smoking. Thanks for the input.

Great stuff and so is McBarren's Bold Kentucky....strong and I mix it with HH Burley Flake for a great smoke.

I find HH Burley Flake is a bit flat for my liking so I’ve been blending with a Bold Kentucky.....now it’s my kind of smoke👍👍. I have some jarred with a few months of being married together. Now on my way to my daughter’s......let’s hope today is a good day!!!

Don't forget G&H Dark Bird's Eye! It's a shag cut, and fairly potent. No topping.

You can get blending leaf from many vendors like Smoking Pipes and Pipes and Cigars. Pick up an ounce of the dark fired Kentucky blending tobacco and give it a try for the purest flavor that you can get. Kentucky is my favorite leaf and I will sometimes smoke a bowl of it alone just for the flavor. No anise at all. To me, the flavor reminds me of peat smoke.

I agree with Anthony, and all that suggested MacB Old Dark Fired. I've tried a few DFK blends, and also didn't like the anise topping I found. ODF is pure tobac, reminds me of of a filet mignon seared on the outside with a Guinness stout on the side.
