I'm sure more than a few of us have found artisan carvers that struck a chord with us. Sometimes leaves you wondering why they don't get the respect they seem to deserve. Alex Kappeler is my under the radar artist, fairly popular in Europe this Swedish artist just hasn't caught on on this side of the pond. These are his photos. Below is some of his work I have obtained in the last 3 years...hope you enjoy and share your deserving artists work. , , , , , , , , ,

Those pipes are beautiful! I’ve never seen or heard of the artist you mentioned but I would really like to have one of his pipes.

Todd Harris makes some great pipes but doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. The two pipes below were made by Todd and they both are excellent smokers. AJ

AJ Yeah, AJ...you need another pipe!!!!!Like I need another hole in my head. Both are really terrific carvers. Todd, of course, has always been making great pipes! Greg...He certainly has the "chops" for beautiful pipes.

Fantastic pipes, gentlemen. I'm familiar with both Alex's and Todd's work and I agree that they fly too far under the radar. I'll also make mention of Tyler Huckfelt of Huck's Pipes. He makes unconventional pipes like that one that I also posted in another thread... ... and also Ron Powell of RDPipes, who I think most of you here know...

desolbones... Holy smokes, they are beautiful. As are the other ones here. You've already mentioned rdpipes which is a well-deserved shout out. From other artists I've seen here, I think that Robert Perkins, slowroll and, new to the art, Cramptholomew should also receive a mention. All in different stages, but all with a talent in my books. And I've not even touched on the restorers like joeman, jeffd, sidstavros, and many others I'm sure I've forgotten.

Ron, RDPipes, has been on my PAD list for a while, Several of Todd Harris pipes have migrated my way. Now Tyler Huckfelt , Hucks Pipes. will be watched....I do like unique. There seems to be so much great and creative talent around now it makes it difficult to keep up with 'em all. Sid Stavros does some fantastic resto-mod work, much admired and his slide show/videos are well worth watching. We live in interesting times.

RonD, when he gets up and rolling, is gonna turn out some incredible works of art. I won't call them just pipes, cause if you have seen his website, you'll know that each one is a work of art. One day, I might be able to afford one of his pipes, if he'll make me one. A carver who worked with only hand tools used to turn out some sweet pipes, but not on the level of Todd or Alex or some other fine craftsmen...but he did turn out some great smokers. He is no longer carving as he is not with the rest of us..."in the open market" I only mention him because every one of his pipes has been an outstanding smoker...one, Kirk Fitzgerald of Briar Spirit Pipes (London). Sorry for the crappy pictures...best I can do.

Stunning pipes! Hi all, sorry I’ve been missing of late but these things happen and you learn to live with them. Anyhow as I was playing catch-up on all things Pipe related here in the Patch I came across this thread on artist under the radar and well I had $.02 in my pocket so why not share it? Unless you’re a died in the wool bamboo fly rod fisher, live in PA or are lucky enough to have found one of his pipes Jack Howell is my nomination. Jack wrote a book years back titled The Lovely Reed, which is about bamboo fly rods and gives a great history and includes tapers for anyone wishing to reproduce a vintage taper, Jack was an amateur rod builder and anyone fortunate to own one prizes it. Jacks present days consists of parenting three young girls, pursuing a career that includes playing the clarinet in a handful of orchestras and chamber groups and teaching at Duquesne University, and making pipes. One never knows what fortune will bring, but his goal is to complete at least 50 pipes every year, and for each one to be better in some way than the one before. He also makes reeds for Clarinets. I’m fortunate enough to own his book, have conversed with him on the Classic Fly Rod Forum when I owned it and via email, I won 2 of his pipes but his bamboo fly rods escape me so far. My first of Jacks Pipes is this estate Dublin: The second one is an Acorn which was unsmoked: And here I am keeping it smokey earlier this summer with the Dublin, cheers. banjo

The Acorn and the Clam are 2 of Jacks Signature shapes, while I didn’t place a link in my original posting, I di check my own writing, using died rather than dyed which is obviously correct, it is jwh.fastmail.fm/, many may enjoy looking at his past work in the Galleries section banjo

Some lovely "unknowns" here! Jean de Toit from your country would be a great candidate as well antb. banjo True! As well as Charl Goussard. I have a good few pipes of both makers. I consider Jean a real artist and Charl an expert craftsman. See here: pietenpauw.co.za/ and here: afrankellis.wixsite.com/goussard

I have 2 from both of them as well, Jean de Toit sent me his personal fishing pipe because I purchased a pipe he had on his website he called Just Once. He didn’t think it was going to sell but my fishnbanjo moniker got us conversing about fishing and when the pipe I purchased came he included his personal bamboo shank rusticated Billiard. I have 2 bamboo shank pipes from Charl as well all 4 are fine smokers. banjo
