I'm curious... For those of you who smoke your pipe while driving, how do you tamp? Do you take your hands off the wheel or do you use your finger?

I wait for a stoplight. If I am on the open road I use my knees to steer while tamping. I do the same for loading a bowl. I only unload at a stop light or when I get home. I am also talking on the cell phone and texting because I want to fit in with everyone else on the road.

Usually use my knees but sometimes just use a finger of lots of traffic.

Keep a 7/16" ball bearing in the arm rest to ease into the bowl after lighting, tap the bottom of the bowl if gravity isn't working. Set the pipe on the magnet sticky backed to the dash when needed.

I hold the pipe in one hand while tamping with the other...preferably not at 80mph on the freeway, but sometimes...ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

Sometimes a finger.
All my vehicles have a steering knob, the old "knuckle buster" on the wheel. Since all the tranny's are manual, one hand steering is frequent. So, I can grip the knob with two fingers while the rest hold the pipe. Tamper in the other hand. Fortunately, there is not much traffic on our two lane highway. In town, I tamp at stop lights.

That’s why God gave me a strong index finger on my left hand. When I drive my eyes are on the road and what other drivers are doing, the possibilities ahead always is on my mind. Down “ heir “ most drivers don’t use their directionals when making a turn. Plus, even though NC is NOT a hands free State when it comes to the use of cell phones while driving, I don’t use a cell phone in the car unless I pull off the road into a shopping center. I’ve seen to many accidents due to cell phone use while driving.

That is brilliant!😲 Being the caveman that I am, I just use a heavily callused finger whether I'm driving or sitting quietly at home reading.

If I'm at a stop light, I'll tamp with a tamper I keep within reach. If I'm not, I use a finger of one hand while steering with the other.
I keep at least one hand on the wheel at all times if the vehicle is moving, no matter what.

These days I'm just about confined to smoking in my car because it is getting so blasted cold.
So smoking and driving is no longer an option. It is what I do. I use my finger. And for the love of Pete, people, don't pack and drive. Thats just looney tunes.

I clench while driving so I just drop the tamper in the bowl while I clench.

I keep a tamper where I can reach it. Sometimes I tamp while I have the pipe clenched. Sometimes I hold the pipe and wheel with one hand and tamp with the other.
I never have any problems.

If I'm moving I use my index finger. There is no feeling in it since I had the brilliant idea to touch a car cigarette lighter when I was younger. It's also calloused from being in the construction field for 15+ years.
If I'm smoking a cob I clench it and hold the bowl and tamp with the same hand.
If I'm at a stop light/sign I use a tamper that Walt made. It resides in my car.
I never pack while driving. I prepackaged one in the morning before I leave for work. If I get the chance to smoke it before I'm off, I pack another one before I make my way home.

If I'm moving I use my index finger. There is no feeling in it since I had the brilliant idea to touch a car cigarette lighter when I was younger. It's also calloused from being in the construction field for 15+ years. It's pretty hard to burn your finger, even on the inside of a pipe bowl. You gotta put it in just the right spot and press pretty hard.
The reason a finger makes a crappy tamper is not the risk of injury. Rather, it is the indelicate nature of the tool, and the freshly dirtied finger each time it is applied.
In the car, I can live with those compromises.

If I smoked in my car, i guess I'd use my finger. With all the cell phone users talking and texting while driving I'll wait till I get home to smoke. Want to be able to react quickly if need be. We need to do what I hear they do in Germany, first offense of using a device while driving is suspension of license for 6 mo's, second for 1 year any more and license revoked. Period!

That's the best idea I have heard this week! A self tamping pipe!🎃 We need a meet up before the holidays. 🤠

I hand my pipe to Bambi...I ask her "would you tamp that?"

As @lonecoyote predicted...BRILLIANT! That's such a great idea. Although, desolbones' use of a ballbearing is also ingenious. As for Bambi...she's already sitting behind the wheel. Are you on her knee, trailboss?

I don't smoke in my car for several reasons..I'm never in it for more than about 15 minutes at a time...I hate smoke on my wind shield...Last but most important..What happens when that air bag inflates?

I don't smoke in my car for several reasons..I'm never in it for more than about 15 minutes at a time...I hate smoke on my wind shield...Last but most important..What happens when that air bag inflates? What happens is you lose some teeth, and possibly the pipe goes into your throat. Would be unpleasant for sure. I don't smoke when I'm driving often either. The 15 minute drive to work isn't really worth it. Next time I drive out of town I will have a few pipes packed though. I always get really tired when driving and it helps me stay awake. For tamping, I use a tamper. I wait until there are no cars around me to tamp. I keep my tamper very close and in a place that I can blindly reach into to easily grab it. Clench that corn cob real tight and give it a few tamps and I'm on my way. That idea with a ball bearing is brilliant though. I'll have to give that a try.

I'm never in the car long enough to bother smoking. But if I do, just use a finger.
