This is a fine piece, restored properly.
I would love to be able to identify which Grabows have got a Vulcanite stem at a glance. That's really what holds me back from bidding on eBay. I see a lot of perfectly pleasant Doctor Grabow shapes, sometimes with fine grain, but I'm afraid of getting stuck with an ABS or similar stem.

I want it. haha Kind of what I was getting at in my factory pipe thread. thebriarpatchforum.com/thread/5010/factory-pipesThe factories turned out some great pieces, and I don't think that they got the respect they deserved...this is certainly an example, if the innards are as good as the outers...(judging by the cake I think that box is checked)...a great pipe!

This guy is smiling on this thread...well done. I miss Ed sooo bad. I received an FB notification about his birthday earlier this year and it kind of ruined my entire day.

I see a lot of perfectly pleasant Doctor Grabow shapes, sometimes with fine grain, but I'm afraid of getting stuck with an ABS or similar stem. I have a couple of the ABS stemmed pipes and I honestly don't have much problem with the material itself as far as smoking is concerned. It's flavor neutral and has a feel and bite resistance that is similar to vulcanite. My only real issue with it is that it's not quite as workable as vulcanite and doesn't really polish to true black; more like dark charcoal. The bigger issue with the ABS stemmed pipes is that the overall quality of the entire pipe took a bit of a nosedive around the time that they made the switch from vulcanite. That's not to say that you can't get a good pipe with an ABS stem, because you certainly can, it just means that your odds of getting a dud are increased somewhat.

I admittedly know nothing about Grabow's, but I saw this comment: The blue spade doesn't really have anything to do with the grain quality. It just means that the pipe is a filtered, push-stem pipe. See here for information about Dr. Grabow's briar selection and which pipe models got their best stuff: pipedia.org/wiki/The_Briar_Used_in_Dr._Grabow_pipes

That's some amazing work, my friend. With as much work as it takes that goes into making a pipe by hand, I imagine the restoration is equally as laborious - especially with something in that condition. Kudos, sir!
