I'm finding that a number of my evenings are seeing me sitting on my front steps, with a book and a pipe.
I'm currently reading John Steinbeck's Grapes of Wrath for the first time. I find smoking a corn cob at the same time feels appropriate!
Who else enjoys a read with a smoke? What are you reading?

Usually some form of the Bible....I'm interested in the history as well as the theology.
Sometimes a good novel.

Now that the weather is finally cooling down here, I see a good bit of this in my future. I read outside in the hammock anyway, but just picked up a pipe this year. The summer was brutally hot so my books stayed inside. I'm looking forward to the pipe/book combo.

When I can I sit on the back porch by the fire and enjoy a book with my pipe. Lately I have been re-reading the Honor Harrington series by David Weber.

Two of life's great pleasures combined. I am reading Elizabeth Kostova's The Historian. I started it a few years ago and didn't finish, so I started again from page one yesterday. I thought a novel featuring Vlad the Impaler might be appropriate for Halloween.

Just finished Peter O'toole bio by Robert Sellers, 3 evenings sitting in the tub smoking pipe or cigar. Looks like I'll return to "Eisenhower, The War Years" part 1 of a 2 volume set, drier than O'toole but an interesting character in interesting times.

I like to read but I don't smoke a pipe while doing so.I can't seen to concentrate on both at the same time.

I read books while smoking always. In fact I read books while I eat, drink and other functions. At the moment I'm reading Brian Kilmeade's book on Jefferson and the USMC against the Barbary pirates.

Currently reading "Spring Snow," by Yukio Mishima. It's really good if you're into romance. I'm a slow reader though. Just don't pick up the book all the time. I'm about a quarter of the way through it after a month of having it. haha

For sitting still, the hotter the better. Working in the heat is agony. Sitting still with a few liters of water, the heat and the lush greenery are remade as a source of pleasure.

You'd need to make sure the level of the water is high enough. If that ash drops in a certain place it could be particularly troublesome! I like reading, but I find it difficult so I don't read as often as I should. That said, I often grab a book when I'm smoking my pipe. If it's first thing in the morning, like pepesdad1, I'd grab my bible and couple my morning devotions with the pipe. Later in the day it could be anything close by. If I'm out with my wife then we chat - so no reading there.

I've enjoyed a pipe with a good read for years. Currently I'm reading George Simenon's " Menaces de mort " or Death Threats as translated by Stephen Trussel . When I read Simenon, I smoke Royal Yacht as he did while writing his books and stories.!

I thought a novel featuring Vlad the Impaler might be appropriate for Halloween. I really loved that book. I read it years ago and still remember it vividly. That and Zafon's "Shadow of the Wind" have to be two of the best novels written so far this century. I just finished Kostova's "new" book the other day, "The Shadow Land." Also very good, but very different in style from the Historian, which really speaks to her skill I think. I miss reading with a pipe. I do it occasionally in the back yard on a nice day, but most of my reading is late at night and there's nowhere in my house I can / will smoke, right now. One of these days I'll have a study again...

For those that maybe don't know, the Historian is kind of a Dan Brown style book, but in my opinion much more deliciously written. Also being very respectful yet different take on a very old theme in lit and tradition (i won't give it away).

Books on contemporary politics are hard for me to read. The reason is i am too gullible. I read a book from one side, and say: "wow, that makes total sense. I can't believe anyone disagrees." Then I read a book from the other side, and I say the exact same darn thing.
In the end I get very frustrated and i want the two authors to sit down together and sort it out and then write me a summary. Its like don't argue with me, argue with this guy.
It just takes too much out of me, and goodness knows you can't say anything about it. If I clearly state any political opinion I have I lose half my friends. 6 or 8 opinions and I am out of friends.

You could do what I do and abstain completely. Although I do so for different reasons.

There are so many great things to talk about and read about, I can avoid contemporary politics without running out of things to discuss.

If you lose friends for having an opinion, they weren't friends to begin with. Sad to say it, but most people don't realize you can like someone who has opinions you don't agree with. That's how discourse starts, and thats why no one today knows how to have a conversation anymore.
