I am pretty sure the seller is ok with the price. If the buyer is also ok with the price, good for them both.
Not my money. Not my tobacco. Not my transaction. All that together equals: Not my business.

I'll have to reacquaint myself with the fine points of the transition era tins. I've always sold mine as "Murray era no longer in production". I thought those painted Elizabethan tins were rare and worth over $100. I didn't think she had been reintroduced that long at the time. I see a some upside not outrage.

I sold some Murrays tins and they went for about $75 a while back. People paid $50 as soon as they were not available. I think that was around 2004.

That's a crazy price, especially considering they are still in stock in the UK. I would have thought there were cheaper ways to get them over.

What else did you expect? They've become "unobtainables" now! As with most things, if you've got the dough you can eat bread !

Dino, some people have plenty of money to spend frivolously, to each their own! No tobacco is worth spending a ridiculous amount of money on, many other excellent tobacco’s still on the market today.
One tin of McClelland 40th Anniversary recently sold for $110.00 on eBay. I recently offered a tin for free to a member of this forum, I can sure use the money but the reality is some people give and there are those that just take!!

I'm surprised that you'all are surprised. A blind man could have seen this one coming.
If I had the time, I would have bought all of the stock available and stuck it in my basement. A safer and better investment than Wall Street. Double your $$$ in 12 months.

This and McClellands is money in the bank. Hence, some happy fellows, here.
Also why I offered Cheer, Stonehaven and Penzance, instead of some C&D blend.

One of these days I will have to dig down into the bottom of my cellar and see what Dunhill tins I have left. I know I have four or five tins. Just don't know what.

If I have this planned out correctly, I should be able to sell about 10% of my cellar and be at zero cash invested. Nothing like gettin' all my stuff for free. I bought a factory sealed 1 pound of 5100 that had 10 years on it for $175 last year. I wonder what that would go for on Fleabay these days?

I picked up five pounds fresh from a B&M in Arizona for $150 when the closing announcement dropped earlier this year. Gave most of it to friends who had never tried it and kept a pound for myself.

On the Asian market your 1lb. bag factory sealed 5100 with that much age would sell easily for $500.00 plus. Recently an 8 ounce sealed bag of Stonehaven from 2012 sold for $328.00 plus shipping....just ridiculous!!

Is 515 RC1 similar to 5100? Everyone claims its a match and I've never had 5100.

Well, first off, this is Murray's product, not the STG stuff that recently was retired. So this product actually tastes like the Dunhill blends used to taste and is made from better quality leaf than STG uses. STG is becoming the McDonalds of the pipe tobacco world. So I'm not surprised that someone with money to spend, spent it.
I've bought a few vintage tins, here and there, though never spending the amounts that I see on eBay. When I bought most of mine, prices were often cheaper than new stock, or moderately more. Enameled Escudo tins that sell for $120 a tin? Bought mine for $25 apiece. And that was worth it to me because the A&C Peterson product is much higher quality than the STG product and I knew what happened to that blend with a few years of aging. And there are a few specific cases where I'll pay a bit more to have something that is better than what I can find off the shelf. But I won't pay a lot more, because there is no tobacco made that is worth my spending 4 to 5 times the original retail.
There's plenty of good blends to be had without pissing away huge amounts over them.
Sutliff 515 RC-1 was created to provide a blending flavor similar to 5100. It's not a match to 5100, though it is similar. I like it as a blending tobacco and smoked straight. I have 5100, but to be honest, it's never wowed me as a straight smoking tobacco. Way too monochromatic. I'll give the jars a few more years and give it another go.

Hoping that new red Virginia Crumble Kake isn't just 515

I appreciate what you are saying, but selling "scarce" products to people with more money than they know with, in order to keep $$$ in my pocket? Yes please...

The tins referenced by Dino are more than ten years old and were made by Murray vs Orlik. Both factor into the amount paid, LL. The tobacco isn't worth that much to me, but it obviously is to a tobacco connoisseur who has the money to indulge himself.
