Ben...congratulations, thatβs a beauty of a nosewarmer, plus itβs a Custombilt. Should be a great smoker. Ream the bowl and sterilize yourself. Put on a rubber bit on the stem and call it a day. Save some money for a while. May you enjoy for many happy and healthy years of smoking pleasure ππππππ
PS Most importantly the rim is not burnt at allππ

Looks pretty good to me...don't think you need a ream or any stem work....I'd leave it alone.

Took a few smokes to get use to. One....no more holes from my sharp teeth in vulcanite/ebonite stems. Two...great for those who clench long term. Absolutely no chatter and more comfortable as well. Now I much prefer the rubber bit π PS The bowl doesnβt look like it needs much of a reaming.

Stummel's looking great. That stem might need some attention, though.

I'm going with the majority here...the pipe looks like it needs minimal work, if any. If you can live with it as it is, I'd give the pipe a quick sterilise with salt/alcohol and then work away.

Very nice looking pipe. Other sanitizing it, it looks like it is good to go. The rim of the pipe does makes me wonder if it has been restored before(just out of curiosity). Should be a good smoker.

Topped ? Cleaned on top ? Material has been removed from the rim through sanding. It's sometimes done to remove burns and/or other damage. The lighter color compared to the rest of the pipe and the sharp edges are a dead giveaway.

I took a very quick look and I saw that the carpet didn't match the drapes. The crisp lines on the bowl don't match with the well loved stem. The chamber and rim were sanded down to get the crisp line and the bowl restained. The stem looks like it was soaked a quickly buffed without spending any time on the button.
I'm sure it will smoke just fine!

I like the contrast Just to be clear, I'm not passing judgement on the pipe or it's aesthetics. I'm simply explaining what topping is and how it's identified. It can be done well or it can be done poorly. As Dave mentions above, it has very little, if any, impact on the smoking characteristics of a pipe in either case.

That Custombilt will still be a great smoking pipe. Your going to enjoy smoking the pipe, your not selling the pipe to a collector. Make sure itβs sterile and smoke one of your favorite tobaccoβs while your waiting for the rubber bit your going to order. The pipe is definitely worth every penny you paidπππ
