Here are some of the life lessons that I learned from or whose truth was brought home to me through pipe smoking.
If you expect folks to be friendly when you deal with them, they more often are.
Every moment does not have to be exploration. Comfort and regularly fulfilled expectations are perhaps not adventurous, and maybe not as many "man points", but they are important.
Often enough doing things correctly comes out better.
Often enough tradition can inform as to what is correct.
You can buck the trends and win, in fact sometimes it is the only way to win, but you ignore tradition at your peril.
Only share your good fortune with those who will be happy for you and want to see you do well. Don't spend time with the rest of them.
While I loved my dad, I am glad I am not my dad.
Ride the horse, don't let the horse ride you.

Don’t smoke Mixture 79
Don’t join certain pipe forums
Most pipe smokers I find have a much higher IQ then a cigarette smoker
Pipe smokers in general have a good personality and are not self centered

Like you said:Here are some of the life lessons that I learned from or whose truth was brought home to me through pipe smoking.
Slow and steady is the smoother way.
Knowledge and wisdom are not mutually exclusive but neither are they the same thing.
Contemplation is good for the soul.
More often than not, the old codgers know more than a thing or two.

Don't make $$ the center of your life.
If a problem presents itself, think it through before you remark or act.
Be generous.
Give help and accept help.
Don't consider yourself better than any other human being.

Old men know a lot about the world, good to talk to and soak in whatever knowledge they have to offer.
Tobacco isn't the poisonous devil its made out to be.
Just because seemingly everyone likes something doesn't make it good.
Things that are really good, or that you really enjoy in life can and will eventually go away forever. Cherish every moment, but don't grasp to reclaim that thing at the sake of your own welfare.

Enjoy the journey for you may never get to the destination for which you set out. Be teachable. I'll repeat Paddy's words... Be teachable. When you stop learning from the world, from your faith, from each other...then you find yourself in a very unhappy place.

Experience all you can, but take time to learn along the way. I guess that's a way of being teachable. Accept and respect others, regardless of personal beliefs. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Try to emulate the old guys. They know what they're talking about. (I fall short of this) " scrooge" does not mean miserly and miserable.

I agree but I think the other two that I listed are just as important, Basically I was trying to say be honorable. oh and knowing when to STFU is a big part of being honorable. That last part was not pointed at anyone it was just an observation and has served me well in the last 53 years

That if you are a collector or really jump into your hobby then pipe smoking can become expensive and addictive. TAD and PAD is real Y'all It is! And for many of us add pipe travel. Just this year it's been at least 15 nights of smoke filled fun at an average of $125 a night not including Food, Drink, Gas and Airfare. Times that by about 25 years in the real time hobby and it adds up and in my mid 50's I'm the kid in the hobby.
I brought more life lessons into the hobby but I've always stuck by RC Hackers 10 commandments. I always recommend to new guys a lesson that I learned quick was to find something to collect that fits your budget. IMO it more fun to have a deep collection that you can add to than a couple pipes a year that are a stretch.

TAD and PAD is real Y'all That's what i was thinking about when i mentioned, ride the horse, don't let the horse ride you. The enjoyment of the great tobacco you are smoking in a great pipe should not be poisoned by thoughts of the tobacco you can't get anymore or the pipe that got away.

My girlfriend smokes cigarettes. I always tell her that I don't smoke for a nic hit and I don't smoke when stressed or worried. I smoke when I am relaxed to relax and reflect further. I love messing with the tobaccos so I don't mind drying time and breaking up flakes etc. It's the ritual and the enjoyment of the smoke. Simple peace and joy.

My pipe really to me is like a magic carpet, I zone out, I think of things past, how maybe to make my future and the World better. It’s a magic ride for me, blood pressure comes down and I’m at peace. Hope it’s like that for some of you.

The right way for me to smoke a pipe is the way that works for me. That's real good lesson. At a certain point we know what we are doing and don't have to care what other folks think or recommend. One of my musician friends holds his guitar pick way out at the tips of his extended fingers. I kid him about it calling it the "famous ick-a-bug" grip, because it looks very much like how someone might pick up a dead moth. But he sounds great and plays guitar better than i will ever, so while he takes my kidding, he certainly doesn't need to take it seriously.
