I'm feeling a bit emotional this morning so I'm going to tell you a bit about myself and why I like this forum and all of you so much..I live in a very conservative area of Carolina. All of my friends are far more conservative than I am.I was raised as a Southern Baptist.Yet I have some serious questions about some of their theology.I put that all aside because they are my very good friends..My country friends tell me that I have city ways.Maybe that's because I lived in a large city so long I've been told that I can be too vocal and not a team player..When I come here though I'm not that person.I'm just a simple old man who loves pipe smoking, and talking about it..Every one here has been extremely nice to me.You make me feel like I fit in,like I'm part of the group. This is the only forum I've ever felt that way about.I don't know how many more years I have left. They're passing by pretty fast these days. How ever many that is I hope to spend them here....Thank all of you for making me feel that way.

Thank you for your message, @ . I'm so glad you find this place a place of solace, where people are unified in their pipe smoking. I love the threads you start - they are deep and meaningful and make me think. I'm glad you're a part of this place. I know you weren't phishing for compliments, but there you go - you're a valuable part of the patch. Keep on smoking your pipe and keep on posting.

My only complaint is that your username changes into an emoticon (that's not directed at you - it's directed at the forum software). You must have been tagged hundreds of times and yet you probably never get the notification.

If city ways means having indoor plumbing and a warm butt during the Winter period, there's nothing wrong with that Larry And, if life appears to be passing-by fast, it just means you're enjoying life, and what better way to enjoy than checking-in here with your friendly brothers (and sister) from time to time, right? I'm sure you'll live to be 111 Larry Hey Paul, get off my lawn darnit!

THANKS !!! OLD FRIEND. ___________________________________ I can hit the golf ball any way I can and laugh if it goes in the lake. Them's the breaks. I'm just happy I can still hit that golf ball. I am forwarding this to those on my Seniors e-mail list because it is so well written. Please send back. ( I did ) It's neat. Don't delete this one, you'll laugh when you see the return message. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play, on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50, 60 & 70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost love, I will. I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances from the jet set. They too, will get old. I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of life is just as well forgotten. And, I eventually remember the important things. Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets hit by a car? But, broken hearts are what give us strength, and understanding, and compassion. A heart never broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy of being imperfect. I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never laughed, and so many have died before their hair could turn silver. As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less about what other people think. I don't question myself anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong. So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like it). MAY OUR FRIENDSHIP NEVER COME APART, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART!

Thank you for your post Larry, I understand much of what you're feeling as I feel it too. From what I've observed during my time here at the Patch, this is a community of folks, bound by a common interest that spills over into our common humanity. While there are opinions and positions that divide us, there are more important perspectives and realities that unite us. And perhaps most importantly, we've all agreed that we are going to focus on our common interests and agree to disagree when we do, without malice for each other, always turning back to our common bond of the pipe.
As I too am drifting way, way past middle age (unless I plan to live to 130+, which I really hope I don't), I find this community not only a comfortable place to hang out, it gives me hope for the greater community; we simply need to quit focusing on what divides us and what we fear.

Great post, Puffs!
I've always found you particularly polite. I'm sure it has something to do with the forum policies. Haha Not many polarizing subjects are discussed here beyond "Cob or Briar" "Flake or Rubbed" etc
I would also say that we have some things in common when it comes to our friends and not being afraid to stand apart for your own ideals.
Glad to have you with us! Rather, glad to be here with ya. You out rank me in seniority, if I'm not mistaken 😉

I am still pretty new hear but I like it. I have been a member on another forum since 2009 but haven't been there much lately. Not because I don't like it or the members but I am pretty comfortable here. I have no pipe smoking friends near me so it is nice to have that in common with you all. I am 47 and the years have flown. My youngest son is 20 now and in college and that is sad and awesome at the same time. I miss my little buddy but am impressed with the great man he is turning out to be. Anyway, I feel lucky to have the chance to get to know some of you or all of you. Pipe smoking is a magical hobby because there is way more to it than putting a leaf in a pipe and smoking it. The friendships, the talks and the reflection is unlike anything else IMO.

I don't think anyone can ever ask for more than that...means you have raised a child into manhood, and successfully too.
We are bonded by our love of tobacco and pipes, we are bonded by the respect we all have for each other, the generosity of the members is something we all can be proud of, each in our own way.
Sparks has created a wonderful place where we all can share our thoughts and ideas...and we have shown him, through our support, that we appreciate him and each other.
Long live all the Patchers!

I know there's a lot of "age" around here, and you "old" guys have no idea how much I appreciate your wisdom. I might like to enter in the conversations as if I know something, but it's always in my mind that you guys know more, and always will. It's a respect of elders, and reverence for life experience thing. My grandfather had a stroke when I was 16, and I had NO idea how much I wanted to learn from him at that point in my life. I'm not saying that you lot are filling in for him in any way, but you're certainly folks I look up to as elder statesmen.
I love being part of this place, and I have tremendous respect for each one of you; young and old alike. The acceptance and comraderie of "The Patch" is familial. Thanks for being here, and being who you are.

@ I’ve never been part of a club or a team player. For better or worse I’ve always marched to my own beat. For whatever reason, I don’t feel that way here. The patch is a special place for me and I’m glad to know there are others like me.
