So my friend gave me his Zippo pipe lighter. I hadn't used it before because I kept on forgetting to buy lighter fluid.
I managed to remember to buy some on Monday, so yesterday I filled up the lighter and I used it for the first time today.
I like the way it lights the pipe, but not so sure about that lighter fluid taste that comes with it. Now, to be fair, it's only there for a second or two.
Have I filled it too full or is this something that I need to live with?

Let it sit a day or two though and it won't be as strong.

Light the Zippo, let it burn for three or four seconds, then light the pipe. Most of the kerosene smell will burn away in those extra seconds. Will minimize the annoyance.

I used on for quite a while but got sick of it drying out too fast. I use a gas zippo insert now. Easier to fill and I don't taste the fuel as badly.

Definitely this^^^^^^ also certain lighter fluids can leave a foul odor or taste. I only use Zippo lighter fluid with no issue ever. Try not to overfill your Zippo, due to a flare up on the first light. Remember, let the fluid burn for a second or three before lighting your tobacco. You’ll do just fine👍

I use Bic lighters, but I do keep some Zippo around. If you take a label off something and glue if left on it. Zippo is great to use to remove the glue

I use zippo brand fluid only and dont get much, if any, bad taste. The fluid in the yellow can (Ronsonol) has a stronger flavor.
I rarely use my zippo to light my pipe, but I do have a lighter with a smaller flame that uses the fluid. It's in many of my pictures

I have a couple Zippos that don't see much use but I always buy Zippo or Ronson fluid. Grab the flints too if you see em. I also put a tiny bit of vasoline on the insert as it seems to slow down evaporation.

irminsul has is right. You can also just open in and wait a few seconds for excess fumes to blow away before lighting. You'll save some wick that way.
For me the feel, sound, and even smell of my Zippo are so familiar, it's actually part of the joy I get from smoking.

Zippo lighter fluid is the cleanest burning fluid. Like stated above. Open the lighter an wait a few seconds to ignite. Light it an wait for the large flame to die down. Fire up an enjoy.

I'm home and had a look at the fluid...it's Clipper fluid (who make those cheap lighters).

For those of us who are "cheap"...I take the flint out of my used up Bics by taking off the top of the Bic...I've saved many flints this way...they work real well in Zippos and other lighters. When the Bic has used up all the gas, there is a fairly large flint left to be used...maybe 3/4 worth of flint.

That was the case back in the day, but Zippo bought Ronsonol back in 2010. Since then, it's been the same fluid, just in differently branded bottles for marketing purposes. I think they're finally phasing out the Ronsonol brand though and it'll all be labeled Zippo going forward.

I agree with all the above to minimize the fluid taste, etc. However, I always just use plain old naptha from the hardware store. That s what lighter fluid is, and it's a couple bucks a quart instead of a couple buck for a few ounces. I let it burn for a few seconds and it's fine.

I only use that brand for my Nimrod Commander, which has a capacious tank.

I've been using zippo fluid in the metal cans since way before then for that reason.

One alternative to lighters or matches I've been using lately is hemp wick. It avoids most of the toxic chemicals and smells associated with lighters or matches and also burns at a lower temperature than both. Of course you have to light the hemp wick with a lighter or match, but that smell or taste is not transferred to your pipe. Here's an article I found about it on Smokingpipes.com www.smokingpipes.com/smokingpipesblog/single.cfm/post/an-alternative-to-matches-and-lighters

I do not like Zippos for pipes. I may be alone in this. The lighter fluid taste, even though it doesn't last long, bugs the heck out of me. I've been using an Old Boy lately and love it. For a long time I used matches, but a lighter is less work. The only complaint I have about the Old Boy is that it frequently needs refilling.
