...but when I tilt it to light my pipe I'll fill the bowl with wax. 😔 A properly packed bowl should be fine when you turn it upside down, wax won't be a problem.

I have several lighters, but in regards to performance in any type of wind or breeze, the zippo is tops.

So my friend gave me his Zippo pipe lighter. I hadn't used it before because I kept on forgetting to buy lighter fluid. I managed to remember to buy some on Monday, so yesterday I filled up the lighter and I used it for the first time today. I like the way it lights the pipe, but not so sure about that lighter fluid taste that comes with it. Now, to be fair, it's only there for a second or two. Have I filled it too full or is this something that I need to live with? You just get used to it. The charring light is never where i try to get good taste from my tobacco anyway lol. Let it sit a day or two though and it won't be as strong. I agree I just lit my pipe and didnt notice it. It is more convenient than those plastic bic lighters. I used to have an IM Corona Old Boy but it had a bad gasket after a couple of years. I sent it in for repair and the same thing happened again. It was a nice lighter but not a good value due to the mechanical flaw.

It's pretty damn hard for something to go wrong with one.

Zippo have superb customer service!! They notify you when your lighter is being return shipped by UPS with a tracking number. Zippo pays for return shipping and they also send a small package of Zippo flints👌👍👍

Back to bic. Walt, purge the lighter completely. Fill as much as possible and set the flame adjustment to its lowest point and light a few times. Purge lighter completely again and refill and set flame adjustment screw to the middle and you’ll be fine. Make SURE you use a butane that’s filtered 9 to 11 times. Cheap butane causes more problems then what it’s worth in the long run!!

The above talk reminds of why i gave up on butane lighters and went back to my zippo or matches. Never fails, no issues unless you drop 'em into a canyon.

I tried that, Ted...the valve itself has a problem...can't adjust the flame at all...it is wide open no matter which setting I put it on...only works properly when it is almost out of fluid (gas) and then works for 5 minutes or so then dead.

You got to put the butane in the fridge for a day or so then refill the Corona. The two happiest days in a pipers life is when he buys a Corona the other is when he goes back to a BIC.

Zippo with pipe insert is the best for outdoors. I just got back not to long ago from my fishing/camping trip to Cape Lookout, NC. Try lighting a pipe with butane in cold weather with a wind, it isn't going to happen. No problem with the Zippo. I do use my butane when indoors and outdoors when it is warm.
Let is burn for 3 seconds as mentioned is key and just use the zippo fluid.

As others have mentioned, the Zippo is great in tough outdoors conditions . That includes wind, cold, and high altitude such in the mountains. - - It’s already been stated that letting the flame burn for a few seconds will minimize or eliminate any bad fluid taste. Buy Zippo fuel. Get a bicycle inner tube and cut out a round band of it to put over the seam between the upper & lower halves of the lighter. This ‘ranger band’ will help reduce evaporation of the lighter fluid so it doesn’t have to be filled as often.

I own a weather proof case for my Zippo lighters just for that purpose, works well. Any store that sells camping or fishing items would have them in stock.

I've been an avid Zippo user since 84 when my grandfather got me my first one for my 18th birthday. The distinct click and smell of the fluid mixed in the the smell of the smoke keeps the memory of my grandfather alive with me every time I light up.
