My apologies if I've posted this in the wrong section...
I received a new MM Danish Spindle (bent stem) in the post yesterday. It feels rather nice in the hand, and smokes nicely...I had two bowls through it today already...but the plastic stem feels a bit cheap.
There's a few touches of flashing and some prominent seam lines. As a plastic modeller, this grates at me a bit. I've already trimmed things a bit,and may take some finishing paper to it later, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a sorce for replacement stems? Even better if they're in the UK😉
The other question I had was about staining the cob. I'd imagine they develop colour and character with use,but are there any ways to stain them?

In the US there is forever stems. I'm not sure if there's anything in the UK though. I haven't stained a cob. Well, I tried putting some furniture polish scratch remover on one, but it didn't do much after a few coats. However, what I HAVE done is what you see in my avatar. That was done by taking a dremel to it and going to town, then spraying with BBQ spray paint from B&Q. I left it at that for a few months until I was again in B&Q and found some enamel paint. I gave it a coat with that and it's shiny. I still can't help with the stem problem though.

You can get stems to replace the "cheap" plastic ones...someone I'm sure will give you the link. I used Krylon spray paint (black and hunter green) to spray the cobs...took 2 times to get it the way I wanted them. They look much better now, and the appearance is the way I want them to look. I've kept a few cobs with the natural look, but I don't think that stain will give you the look you want. JMO

Use just a mixture of bee’s wax and mineral oil and it will get darker with each smoke. This is one of 6 custom Cobs I made. This is an Oom Paul style Reverse Calabash that is an outstanding smoker.

I have many Forever Stems (from Walker Briar Works) and I love them. They come in both vulcanite and acrylic. The vulcanite ones are, of course, easier to clench, but the acrylic ones are available in many nifty colors and patterns.

That's an awesome looking cob. The smaller bowl, which model is that?

@lonecoyote That's an awesome looking cob. The smaller bowl, which model is that? Appreciate your comment 👍 The rear Calabash bowl is from a new never smoked old MM Eaton Corn Cob Pipe. Those were the bowls where the Cob was on the softer side. I had a few and needed to do something with them other than smoke directly out of the Eaton. The Eaton and yes the Legend don’t hold up long enough for me, I tend to smoke a hot pipe at times if I don’t pay attention to my cadence. I can burn thru one of those chambers in under 25 smokes.

Here is picture I had of the Eaton bowl connected to the Country Gentleman bowl. The underside os the Eaton I dug out and plugged and finished with a piece of hardwood. Worked out well👌👍👍

Here’s a better picture of the pipe. [br I'm surprised how appealing this is. You'd think two cob "Barrels" almost connect together wouldn't look good. But this is a very cool cob. I'd smoke it

I'd smoke it Thanks, glad you like the design. It’s well balanced, took some time to get the exact angle I wanted between the two bowls, so it looks good and sits well. The stem is wide enough to accommodate a rubber bit. It is my best smoking Cob .

Awesome pipe Ted! I have stained cobs, sanded cobs, etc. It works fine but doesnt hold stain like a good piece of wood. All of my cobs have replacement stems, which is one reason I do not buy any more cobs. I have forever stems, I have modified stems off ruined pipes, I have ordered stems from aristocob, etc. www.aristocob.com/FREEHAND-Non-Filtered-Acrylic-Pipe-Bit-Black-P664766.aspx

I don't do any modifications to my cobs, but I have stained a few of them. I used the same alcohol based stain that I use when I refinish a briar. When I'm not so lazy I may try putting a little wax on these and buff them out to see what happens. This is an Apple Diplomat with a Forever Stem. I used light brown stain on it. I kind of like it. This is a cheap cob that I finished with some Minwax stain. I call it The World's Ugliest Cob. I smoke the hell out of this pipe. It is almost always hanging out of my mouth when I work in the yard.

Here’s a better picture of the pipe. This is a very impressive outcome. How did you make the shank-to-cooling-chamber joint?

I cut down the shank from a new MM Country Gentleman pipe, which the bowl is used for the main smoking chamber. I removed the shank from the rear Eaton bowl, used a small jewelers file to make the hole in the Eaton bigger to accommodate the shank from the Country Gentleman pipe. Filing on the proper angle of the Eaton bowl was the only hard part to achieve properly.

I think they're about $.50 each. I have a bunch of them so I can replace them as I need to. I also have a MM legend that I stained dark brown, but I didn't have a picture of it. www.aristocob.com/DANISH-Filtered-Pipe-Bits-Black--P4903387.aspxEdit: I replied to the wrong post.
