A lot of times when I'm sitting in my chair smoking a pipe my thoughts wander.I never know where they will end up.They seem to go where they want to.I'm not sure how but today I found myself thinking about what my favorite food is.After some serious thought I've decided that it's ..Cheese..Sharp Cheddar and Aged Swiss to be exact.Of course I would want some Ritz Crackers and diet Coke to go with it..Who knows what thoughts my next bowl will bring? Maybe some Chocolate Cream Pie or Carrot Cake.

Another great discussion topic.
I find my mind doing the same or somehow going blank.
A lot of times I find clarity in my thoughts.

I just try and relax, contemplate on the past and wonder about the future. I guess from having a poor appetite, I don’t think about food.

I'm lucky I can still think at all. Meds and old age will do that to you. Most of all, I'm glad that I have an extended family here on the Patch.

I often think of myself being in a place in time while smoking a pipe. Last night as I smoked my churchwarden with some Virginia flake, I imagined I was smoking in front of an old stone fireplace in a tavern in the 1800s sipping whisky and not looking at a tv or iPhone.
It’s interesting for sure, either that or i am getting more f**ked up in the head.

Thoughts of the past times spent with my daughter and Theo. Shooting at the range with stinky or out on the bass boat or camping at the lake and cheerleading. Memories of the first day Theo and I first met, I ponder why she loves me even if'n I don't deserve it, the way she makes my beard oil perfect every time (today is lilac/rose) oysters and rolling rock on the beach in Florida. With these two women in my life it's the happiest I have ever been.

Can't say I think of much,as I'm usually reading. What I will say is that after a pipe I'm much more chilled and calm

The other night I got completely lost while staring and admiring a pipe that was given to me.
When I smoke Gaslight I feel that I'm in the wrong place to be smoking it and often think of a downtown area at night. Just like my church warden, it takes me to a forrest.
If I'm just sitting and only smoking, I try to evaluate life and where I'm headed.
More often than not my mind wanders into thoughts that were not the original subject.

When I am just taking a smoke-break, I usually think about issues at-hand: my next step on a project, what's for dinner, why is this body part sore, stuff like that.
But when I take those slow, contemplative smokes, I think about everything under the sun: past events, possibilities for the future, the meaning of life, and so on.

I'm usually reading when I smoke, so my thoughts are on the subject at hand. When I'm not reading, I'm contemplating the universe or watching my little dog in his quest to capture the illusive squirrel; he is a lesson in exuberant persistence in the face of continual failure.

... I'm more contemplative during many of my smokes but there are times I think of other things...like Larry noted...sometimes food...just recently I was thinking of some of my favorite cookies...basically, I have 4...soft oatmeal, sugar wafers, animal crackers, and top of my list, shortbread, Walker's being one of the best but they're so expensive and Lorna Dune, also very expensive today...even at Wal-Mart price for Walker's is $7.+ and L. Dune right at $5.

My thoughts usually run to redheads who are bad for me (or so believes my wife), 1911's I can't afford (all the good ones are), and how much tobacco makes for a full cellar (about one pound more). I could contemplate world peace, what's wrong with America, or is it horsepower or torque that is more important, but I try to stick to the basics.

I've realised that when I read while smoking a pipe it often takes away from the pipe smoking experience. It adds to the reading experience for me, but I don't have the same focus on the pipe smoking and relaxation it brings.
Oftentimes I prefer to just smoke my pipe and let my mind wander (like the op mentioned). Perhaps, for me, with pipe smoking less is more.

I like to concentrate on my pipe smoking and free my mind of anything that may have caused worry during the day.
