I don't know why I thought of this today - I guess my mind just wanders. Common wisdom is that you should never remove the stem of the pipe while the pipe is hot. I was thinking that maybe the problem isn't with removing the stem - it's with getting the pipe hot in the first place. I almost never have a hot pipe; it rarely gets more than just a tad warm. If it did get hot I'd think something was wrong.

My friend, with this post, you can easily open a can of worms on this subject. And not just any worms mind you, worms of mind-boggling powers.
I'll say this though, as with all things in pipe smoking, one should do what they wish to do with their own mind, body and property. I've read debate on both sides, neither are wrong nor right.

That's very diplomatic of you, McWiggins. I get your point, djo - if the pipe isn't hot to begin with, then there should be no issue with removing the stem after a smoke. It depends on how hot is hot.

Do what you want it’s your pipe. I have been breaking down and cleaning my pipes immediately after a smoke it seems like forever with nary a mishap, pipe cleans because gunk is hot and it does very well. Again it’s yours, do as you may.

It depends on which pipe and what I'm smoking. After a few bowls in any of my pipes I take them apart when they're still warm. As oldcajun123 said, it's easier to get the sludge out when its warm.

I think this is one of those deals where you have nothing to gain by pulling a hot pipe apart and everything to lose.

I have had some instances where pipes that were normally snug, were really tight after smoking, like It might take pliers kinda force... in them instances I wait.

Pretty much this^^^^. It isn't the hot pipe so much as the heat from the smoke affecting the tenon and shank. If you are drawing smoke through the shank you are gonna heat it up...just plain fisiks.

I will just comment on the hot pipe part of the statement. I have pipes that are prone to getting hot so I sip them. I also have pipes that have thicker walls or just more dense briar that smoke cool no matter how hard you puff. I do believe that over time if you smoke a pipe too hot damage could be done so I make sure to never let them get that hot.

Most of my pipes get warm enough (not hot) to keep me from thinking about removing the stem. The other dayb however, I was smoking a Brindisi churchwarden which doesn't get smoked often. It started gurgling, so I thought I would try to remove the stem to clear the gurgling. To my surprise, it was as easy to remove and replace as if it were totally cool. I wouldn't think of doing that with my other pipes.

Been doing this for the past 50 years of smoking. No problems so it works for me.

Like Charlie said, I have pipes I can't take down while hot.
Most I will open and swab mid-smoke regularly to prevent gurgle. I'm gentle though. Never had an issue.
I absolutely love my Peterson Army style for that reason. I know I'll own more pipes like it. Also a great traveler!
The proverbial grain of salt here is that my most expensive pipes are two $200 Petersons I picked up for an insane 50% off at Pipes&Cigars. I've seen some of the treasures you fellas smoke and I may be more inclined to baby such pipes if and when I own similar pieces.
In fact- I wouldn't attempt to with my SlowRoll. Its such a delicate pipe. I baby that one. I only smoke it when I'm showing off for company. Haha

I run pc's as I'm smoking to sop moisture ... But , always wait till they're cool before the final clean {pc - stem , shank , bowl ... then wipe down whole pipe , etc.} . No chances here .

Better to not take a chance then to do so and regret it.
