I was driving by a local antique shop and thought I'd take a look. I found a couple of pipes that I found interesting so I snagged them. The case they were in was marked down 50% so I got both of these for $23 bucks The first is a Grabow Color Duke Bulldog. It had serious lava on the rim, I thoughr maybe the finish was burned, but for 12 bucks I took a flyer on it. It cleaned up pretty quickly. There are some ashtray dings on the rim and a couple of other minor dings, and the stem was overclocked (quick fix) but all in all it looks to be in pretty good shape. I'm going to get out the reamer, the alcohol, pipe cleaners, and Q tips, give it a quick cleanup and take it for a test drive. I don't plan on doing much of anything else to it other than polish up the stem. The second is a billard with a sandblast finish that has markings on the flattened bottom. On the bottom bowl it has 273. On the shank it says Rustic English and then closer to the bit it says Made in England. From a quick Google search, I *think* that Rustic English may be a Comoy's second, but I don't know for sure. If anyone has any insight, I would appreciate it. It looks to be a pretty nice pipe. The stem was stuck, but a few minutes in the freezer remedied that. I think I am going to clean this one up with Murphy's Oil Soap and polish it up. I'll polish the stem too. I'll give it a good cleaning with alcohol leave it at that. I think I did pretty well for my meager investment

I think you did damn well for the money you spent...both pipes are gonna give you a great smoke...I can tell from here. Grabows may be "cheap" pipes...but of the three I have they are all great smokers. That billiard looks pretty good too...bet it is a good smoker. Enjoy them both in rude good health.

I just finished cleaning up the Dr Grabow and fired up some Half and Half. It is a pretty darn good smoker (no filter)

You got a great deal, I think you are on the right track about that briar being a seconds...not much time to look, but I saw this one on SP with the same stamping: www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/estate/england/moreinfo.cfm?product_id=244767They are usually pretty good about definitively stating whose seconds they are selling, but in this case they just may not know...All my English seconds smoke well, I am betting that will be the case with yours.

All of my pipes have "rim darkening". And teeth marks. Sorry to whoever buys my estate! "They are all such nice pipes but..."
