Hi,
I am Silvia, and I am not a pipe smoker, even if I wish. (Are there many women smoking pipe?)
But I am here for a question, I hope you can help me. I have a vintage and antiques online shop, and I found my stuff at a flea market. Last week I noticed a pipe, it was in a box with other small things. I liked it, it had a nice shape, and I grabbed it. I thought I could find information later, on the web. But I didn't find any.
The object is curious, because it proudly says "real asbestos - best quality". It also has a small part that I believe is silver.
I will try to post a picture. Any kind of info you could give me would be of great help.
Thank you very much.
Silvia

Well, if it's asbestos... I would not be putting it in your mouth.
That aside, welcome. There are other woman pipe smokers out there. We have a few that are members here.

Yes, funny to read "ehy, I have asbestos!" on a pipe today, that's why I grabbed it! I am not going to use it, but maybe there are collectors which could be interested. SalvaSalva

Just be sure to read our Forum Guidelines in regards to "Buying, Selling & Trading". Outside of that, you are more than welcome to try and obtain information here.

I am here just to find some information, I have no intention to sell or give links to my shop. It is really hard to find info, even because if I google "asbestos pipe", I find only articles on faulty water pipes! SalvaSalva

Years ago before Asbestos was deemed a health hazard they made Calabash bowls out of it and it was usually black in color. They may have also made other bowls or even pipes from the stuff I'm unsure but, I have seen the bowls. As far as value there not worth as much as a Meerschaum bowl just because most people wish to smoke them and certainly don't want asbestos but, they are a novelty of sorts and part of history.

Asbestos is a fabulous material when handled correctly. The danger comes from breathing in the particles. Asbestos is a fibrous mineral that has barbs on the particles. Those barbs attach themselves to the lining in your lungs and that's why things get nasty. If ingested orally it will pass through you with no ill effects but I wouldn't advise it.

Thank you all! I am investigating, as I have more information I will post it here. In the meanwhile, I have put my asbestos pipe in a freezer bag: I thought the asbestos was just a small part IN it, but from Rdpipes post, now I understand that the black part might be all made of asbestos... I don't have an idea of how dangerous such a small piece of asbestos can be, but having small kids around it's better to keep it away. PS: in a freezer bag and then in a cupboard, not in the freezer...
