I am at the point in life, I really don't want gifts from my kids, what I need I can afford, what I want like an nice sports car the kids cannot afford. Having said that, without my input they are going to give me stuff regardless, and without my input they gave me gifts that I truly didn't want or couldn't use. A couple Items I told them I wanted were real game changers in my barbecuing, where consistency is everything. Thermapen makes a thermometer that helped me realize how inaccurate my analog ones were. www.thermoworks.com/RT600C?gclid=CjwKCAiAlb_fBRBHEiwAzMeEdqeP6KaZfQJzgilEVfJNmkYXsouTGBHA3fci0RRMbiK8NgZz4dxfvRoCug8QAvD_BwECompetition pitmasters use the fancier one: www.thermoworks.com/Classic-ThermapenBut, the more inexpensive one has worked excellently for five years. And on the grill, the Redi Chek Maverick does a great job monitoring the grill and meat temperature, making raising the hood unnecessary and allowing a more efficient experience....My analog one that is threaded into the hood is off by 40 degrees on the average. And with this tool you can check your indoor oven...my door gasket showed evidence of leakage, and this allowed me to make adjustments at the knob instead of replacing the gasket.... (My appliances are due to be mustered out the door in a few years, and I have no desire to spend money if I don't have to.)www.amazon.com/Maverick-Redi-Chek-BBQ-Thermometer-Set/dp/B009ITJT92I give both, a four out of four stars.

I agree with your thoughts of gifts and tools for BBQ. I love my Thermoworks MK4 pen and also have their Smoke. Both work great. Not cheap but it’s one of those things you get what you pay for.

Top one looks like the one Son gave wife with the exception probe slides into a Silicon spatula so you can stir and see temp, really nifty. My kids are now with their own family to buy for, I tell them I don't want anything if I need something I buy it. All my appliances are crashing, bought a Side by side last week. Quality is nil nowadays even when you pay for it.

An appliance repair buddy told me that with all the efficiency mandates from the politicians, that the machines have become more complex, and high dollar circuit boards make it cheaper to trash and start over again. Along with all the bells and whistles, screens so that you can view inside the fridge without opening it, wifi to order products with..separate assemblies for washing delicates etc....only means more parts to fail.
Extended warranties on most things I do not buy, but for new appliances, they are a must. My fridge, washer, and dryer (bought in 2005) all Maytag all had issues after the factory warranty expired that made the extended warranty a good choice for me, I easily recouped the cost.

My wife and kids know my favorite non-profit organizations. I encourage them to make a donation in my name; that works out better for everybody. Although, if one of them wanted to spring for a new Miata...

I was recently gifted with an 8oz bag of Esorterica Dunbar by a generous member of our forum. Needless to say, I was grateful and delighted.
Worked for me!

About one year ago, I was given a Falcon pipe with two bowls from one of our members here. That is the gift which kept on giving.
Usually, I am not on the receiving end so it was a thrill.

Know what you mean about gifts... people ask me what I want and it's either 1) someone else to dump work on at Work, or 2) a Porsche Cayman GTS, neither one of which anyone can deliver, so I just say, "nothing."
Sad thing is, I'm actually at an age and station in life where a tie isn't a bad gift, but I'll be damned if I actually ask for one!
