By introduction, I've had a long term addiction to pocket knives and multitools, which is currently in remission.
With multitools, there is a price/quality threshold you need to cross (Gerber MP600/Leatherman Wave/Victorinox Swisstool) before you get to a reliable user.
With pocket knives I've found brands like Victorinox,Opinel and hignokami are quite low cost but £ per £ out perform branks like Spyderco.
So far in my smoking career I've taken a real liking to MM Corn Cobs and Falcons (or spanners as my workmates have christened them).
I have a Blakemar and a Peterson Shamrock which are fine,but...
Is there a real performance difference between say a MM Legend and a high end Peterson?

My personal preference is a well aged Algerian briar pipe, but give me a well cured MM Country Gentleman pipe, I can smoke a few in one day....any day of the week. I also enjoy Morta and Meers as well, but briar is still number one for me👍
I own many Viking, Falcons and two Kirsten pipes, which all see their fair share of use.
PS I only use a MM Legend if/when I smoke any Lakeland blends. Perfect size bowl for any of these “ GHOSTING “ tobacco’s.

For me, nothing beats the flavor of briar. I only smoke cobs when on my tractor in the summer.

Briar for me the only thing a cob is good for is the pretty flames it makes on the BBQ as a entertainment piece. I realize not everyone is a far evolved from the apes as briar smokers. You can always shave that one piece eyebrow and have the extra appendages removed to look normal.

I've gotta say I haven't noticed much difference between a cob and briar pipe, but I don't think I have any high end briar pipes.
That said, there are times when I feel a briar has the edge. Other times the cob does.
I do like the look of briar more than I do the cob, though.

For me it comes down to bowl size. I haven't found any cobs with very wide bowls. My favorite cob is my Freehand, but there again, large cob bowls are mostly large as far as depth, and I find I like wider bowls for some blends. I do like the looks of briar more than cobs, and the standard stems on cobs have a cheap feel in the mouth. All in all there are pluses and minuses for both briar and cob, but I still prefer briar overall. Just my opinion.

I didn't realise how good they were. They do smoke well, to be fair.
