So a old friend of my parents wife passed away 2 weeks ago. Just leaving him and his daughter. So we invited them over to our place for thanksgiving, not wanting them to be alone for the holiday. So we all had a really good time, I think they enjoyed it as much as they could. Well before they left he went out to his car and brought in a box that he gave to me. He said he used to smoke pipes some 20-30 years ago and gave me his pipes. So being totally excited I open it up. 5 briar pipes, 2 alum pipes, 4 meerschaum pipes, 3 tobacco pouches and a 400 gram bag of Oso Negro(not to dried out). The trophy in all of this is one of the meerschaum pipes. It a churchwarden style, 7 pieces that have to be screwed together, beautiful carvings, and never been smoked. Honestly I am somewhat leery of smoking it because it is so nice. Thoughts/opinions, also the Kirsten is missing it's bowl any idea where I could get one?

Wow what a grateful gift. I believe I would smoke that gorgeous meer, even if only for special occasions. But I am willing to bet it will be such a creat cool smoker that it will be hard to let it rest too long between smokes. Sounds like you are a very good person and deserving of these additions to your collection. Enjoy them and smoke them.

Congratulations on your new collection. That is a beautiful meerschaum churchwarden. Very nice early Christmas presents. I've never heard of Oso Negro (Black Bear) pipe tobacco. Let us know what it's like.

Cool stuff! Don't hesitate to smoke the lap pipe, but get some churchwarden cleaners or the continuous length ones...if your stem is over 12 inches long, you might want to go with the 52 inch continuous.... The length of that meer stem makes it suceptible to breaking, as with all meers, best to smoke over a carpeted floor or out over the grass in the back yard. With care, it should be fine to smoke. 20 to 30 year old tobacco, in a ziploc bag and pouches, I would guess that they will work best in the fireplace.

I'd definately smoke it, holding it carefully while reading a book.

I think that bowl-less Kirsten is crying out for a Don Warren bowl.

So I think I will try some Black Frigate and Blockade Runner in the big meerschaum. And see if I can pick up a Don Warren bowl for the Kirsten.

Since you got it on Thanksgiving maybe you could dedicate that beautiful meerschaum to a once a year smoke on Thanksgiving. It would be a great reminder to slow down and think about all you are thankful for while smoking it. If you like a blend that has been discontinued maybe you could pair the two.

Smoke it, Iโm sure that was the intent of you being given them. Iโm sure I have some spare Kirsten bowls send me a private message with your address and Iโll send you one. banjo
p.s. You should check if the screw in portion for the bowl is attached to the pipe or somewhere in the group, if not youโll need to contact Kirsten to purchase the screw and possibly a filler for the bottom of the bowl.

Kirsten Bowl - You can order directly from Kirsten now as they are up a running. You can find them on ebay or etsy. You can find people like me that have 3 or 4 old ones laying around and take your chances they will be ok once cleaned up. The choice is yours (in my best SAW voice).
