Today, I finally got the trains running under the tree. I built this platform last year. I have N scale, which are mighty small and temperamental. This is probably the 4th platform I've made since I got married. Anyone else do trains?

I have a soft spot for them, but have never had one. We've never had the space.
I've gotta say, that's a sweet setup. Really sets the thing off.

That platform is 48" square (122x122cm). When we were first married, we had a small apartment, and I wanted trains. My dad always had an HO scale platform when I was growing up - still does it today for the grandkids.

Growing up my Dad had both Lionel and H O scale trains in the basement of our home in Uniondale. We were NOT allowed in the basement unless my Dad was present. I do remember the set up was spectacular, many mountains he made himself, must have been a few hundred feet of track that rain around the entire circumference of the basement that consisted of three levels. I can actually remember once my Dad let me take control of the BIG black transformer with two red handles that controlled the black Lionel locomotive that also bellowed smoke once a “pill “ was dropped into the smoke stack. It was just amazing, three separate sets of trains running at the same time. The H O trains running in the opposite direction. Once we moved to Dix Hills no more trains, I don’t have a clue where they all ended up! More than that I don’t remember.

I had some good N scale setups in the past... my father was a switchman for Southern Pacific here in the Bay Area, and when he retired he was chairman of the United Transportation Union... railroad guy to the end.

Had a basic tree train set as a kid but these days we have two cats. Super, over the top curious cats. Way too curious for their own good cats.
We cannot do trains in this house. lol

Building to spec the town, and buildings, and streets. I'm almost glad I don't have more room, otherwise I could see myself probably going down that rabbit hole. I feel like that kind of pays homage to guys like your dad.

In my town, and the next town over, they still put up massive Christmas train displays in the firehouses.

Had track running all over the house...made my mother sooo happy...NOT. I remember those huge transformers and all that went with them...Pullman cars, equipment cars, cars that you could load timber on...all kinds of stuff for a kid to get lost in. Remember the tender car that was right behind the locomotive? They sure were fun back in those days (early to mid 50's)

My Dad passed away in ‘82, I do remember my Mom telling me that “ your Dad spent thousands of dollars on his train hobby and did not share with his children enough “! Only time my siblings or I ever watched the trains was when he was running them. One wonders why I was MUCH closer to my Mom, a great one as well. My Mom passed November 23rd 2014. I have an Eternal Candle lit for my Mom. I consider myself lucky to have such a wonderful mother and close friend. Today is four years that I lost her, she’s in my heart for all eternity. Sorry, if this thread went slightly off track. Now back to trains and happier times!!!

My Dad started the train hobby back in the early 50’s through the 60’s. Spending thousands of dollars as my Mom stated was a bundle back then! I remember the timber cars, also a few cattle cars where the cattle were removed by another mechanical device. In the dark the street lights and all other lights along the tracks were breathtaking. My Dad was extremely meticulous with his hobby, rarely did a train come off the tracks.

Another N-thusiar here!
Sadly,I've just had to break up my modular B+DCR( Broke + Done Cheaply railway[loosely inspired by the Bangor+Co Down railway in Northern Ireland ]) and am looking for a home for Gordon's Folly,my micro N layout.
I'm salvaging as many buildings, all my locos and rolling stock for the next project once I relocate.

I have always loved seeing them, never had one. An uncle in Portland with no kids had his entire basement set up with towns, mountain ranges, etc...pretty crazy.

I HAD a few sets of HO scale sets. My grandparents bought me one for Christmas in the early 90s and that's where it all started. I bought and collected engines, cars and tracks until my late 20s...
Just another thing "lost" in my divorce....

I have a decent collection of N scale trains, cars, houses etc. largely bought through eBay. Right now they are all in storage waiting for a permanent home.
PS Once the home is found, I would really like to upgrade the controllers as well as purchase the complimentary smart locomotives.

I could spend hours on working on the background...the hills, tunnels, bridges, grass, etc. Not that I'm good in any way with things like that. I'm not artistic, but the THOUGHT of that appeals to me. Again, I don't have the space.

walked into my local hobby shop the other day, looking for a new engine. They had one N scale - $100. That's on the cheap side. I reminded myself how I have a pipe hobby to compensate for, and the N scale engine would have to wait...

Not for me. I suspect that model trains would be a financial Pandora's Box as would scale modeling for me. Scale modeling is a HUGE addiction for me, and I have spent years avoiding it. I know myself, and the money I spent on pipes/tobacco and guns (very expensive tastes) would pale in comparison to the money I would drop on scale modeling. I have to believe that train modeling would be equally financially destructive for me.

I hear you Patrick, there are places I just don’t go either...I found myself In the past bemoaning the fact that a car repair costed ______, that could have bought me a Dan Wesson 1911.... I started equating everything to that. At least here in the USA, if you stay out of the high end pipes, you can manage reasonably... buying tobacco now is certainly a hedge against inflation.

Just another thing "lost" in my divorce.... That is total bull crap...why a woman would not insist on getting something back to her former husband is beyond me. That would be like a guy taking all her shoes and jewelry, it always seems as if it is a one way street in these matters.

I agree. She got them "for the boys." Along with all of my old comic books, sports cards, matchbox cars from my grandfather, huge tub of legos (yes I'm 35 and still love legos), and all sorts of other stuff. Also a car that she totalled and she quit making the payments on what gap insurance didnt cover.... my credit dropped 120 points in less than a year. I got royally screwed. Divorces are 1 sided, especially when there's kids. Thankfully we had no problem figuring out "custody." My kids are more important than my "things," but that doesnt mean I'm not still pissed about it.
This thread makes me want to go to Hobby Lobby and buy a new train set...

qmechanics : Toodles is one of my minions I send out to destroy my enemies. Cramp: Dad had us on HO trains and cars back in the sixties. They called them HO back then. I have sets of trains and cars, but have never had the energy to set them up. Have a bunch of Hot Wheels, Matchbox, etc, too. Love your setup at the top. Another thing I have not been able to do is to make a village out of a thousand ceramics, Dept 56, Liberty Falls, and lesser known brands too numerous to mention, though I love the Ivy and Innocence village pieces Should I let you know when this stuff goes up for auction? Looking into old folks' homes at present. They'd better have wi-fi
