I wouldn't have started a train hobby if not for eBay. First finding a hobby store that carries N scale (not to mention a healthy stock of items) is not always easy and then there is the cost.
My model train hobby(Two landscapes many locomotives and cars etc. now on hold) is less expensive than my pipe hobby (Pipes purchased largely through estate auctions with any high-end pipes coming at a big big big discount.).So long as one does not get carried away and works on the cheap, he or she should be fine.
