[singing in the style of cypress hill] just got some sutliff vanilla custard in the mail...inhale
I have heard there is a common theme with these aromatics that are fresh and have a lot of casing. people tell me to let it dry for a half our. some people even say they cellar an aromatic for a year not really to age it just to dry it out. now I know why. I really wanted to like this since it had potential to be better than lane 1Q but it only left me wanting so far. it was the first proper super sweet aromatic I have purchased. it was hard to get it to smoke right. it never got hot to the touch but I noticed a fast puff was slightly tongue bitey and the slow puff would just go out. in the middle it was ok but I did not get a nice thick smoke like I wanted. I did not get a full flavor complex experience. there was nothing besides the sweet virginia and vanilla custard so I am immediately thinking about blending it into something like maybe lane 1Q + vanilla custard. in the middle is the mild taste of paint thinner. towards the end I got the intended flavor of all the sweet stuff, mostly caramel. probably that tobacco on bottom was dried out like an oven letting it taste more correct. finishing up, the goop was goopy. it was even steaming water up the stem and into my mouth.
it is mostly wide ribbon sweet virginia but I would have preferred a good combination of something less bland.
maybe I should just buy some cult blood red moon to try? seattle pipe club plum pudding? Butternut Burley? looking for tips and suggestions please.

Sutliff J4 Burley is nice. Kind of a toned down version of 1Q. Check out the Blend of the Month section, there are some reviews by some Patchers.

Iβve tried vanilla custard twice....wonβt be a third time....aged....dried or blended!!!
Any of the above you mentioned smokes great with absolutely no tongue bite. Cult Blood Red Moon is the ONLY cherry/brandy flavored that actually smokes smooth with a very pleasant cherry flavor. The other two above I also smoke often.....I will add.....πππππ

I don't particularly like Vanilla Custard by itself; I mix it 50/50 with Sutliff Amaretto and then it's more than the sum of its parts.

J4 and Butternut burley are the only 2 aros I smoke a couple times a week. I can see why people like cult blood red moon, it's just not for me. After 2 bowls out of the tin I split the rest up and gave it away as a pay it forward.

I've had those experiences, when I eagerly anticipate a terrific smoke from a new blend and then it lets me down. Try what @irminsul suggested. Maybe the mix with 1Q might liven it up a bit???

Uh oh, ,I just ordered some of that yesterday.Sounds like it will be getting a strong injection of some 5 brothers.I had to try it though,I try to order at least 1 aro when I am buying a load.It is true what others have said about drying and or storing the ones with heavy toppings or casing, they do benefit from it.There are some aros that sound delicious but I find them to be goopy when smoked alone. Not being one to waste I usually blend them with something like 5 brothers so I can get the benefit of the smell and and a little taste.

I have 8 tobaccos. 5 of them are aromatics. the only one I actually like or love is the 1Q. when I mix 1Q with a tiny pinch of lane hazelnut I am in heaven. all this other stuff was an expensive lesson about training my palate.

Just because Ted doesn't like it, doesn't mean that you won't. There is a reason that it is such a popular tobacco. A lot of people love it.

Did you have fun in the process? I would say no. most of the process was smoking tobaccos I didn't like while I was wasting money at the same time. I guess there is no shortcut to finding what you like unless you have a local friend with a wide selection to try them all for free. isolation is good for prolific writers but only after the coffee, tobacco, firewood are fully stocked.

For some odd reason 1Q dries my mouth completely when I smoked the blend a few times. Most likely a Ph issue.

I can agree there is something missing from 1Q in that regard. it is not super flavorful or moist which is why it blends so well with others that have more pungent savory flavors. it smokes well too. My attraction to 1Q is because it is a neutral blank canvas for someone that does not smoke cigarettes at all. there is nothing objectionable or offensive in it. it is only very slightly nutty and woody but not smokey. a lot of people say smoking 1Q is like puffing on air, too weak, no flavor etc... yeah maybe it is. but I think it is good if that is what you want in the first place.

I admit to being an aromatic fiend, so I tried Sutliff's Vanilla Custard. It was like French kissing the spigot on a boiling tea kettle. It was some of the worst bite through which I've ever suffered. I will spot try a lot of aromatics, but mass production aromatics are rarely worth it (Cult is a solid exception). Aromatics from in-store blenders - Wilke, Milan, Boswell, The Country Squire, etc. - are much better and almost always pain free.

Try some Lane RLP-6. It's kinda like 1Q but with a lot more substance. Everything that 1Q lacks, IMO. Try anything recommended above, as well. And, for something different, but one of my absolute favorite aromatic smokes, Sutliff Aromatic English.

I am all ears.

Butternut Burley is one I have NOT heard a negative review on...you might give it a try. Plum Pudding and Bengal Slices are also pretty good IMO.
