This is a first impression review, and a comparison between Bombadil and Shortcut to Mushrooms. I'm basing this off of two bowls of the new Bombadil blend by Just for Him.
I was eager to try this, since it seemed to be somewhat of a replacement for Shortcut to Mushrooms. So, I smoked a bowl of Bombadil, then fired up a bowl of STM, and then smoked them side by side.
Bombadil:
Upon opening the bag, there is a distinct sour/vinegar smell, mixed with wet creosote from the Latakia, and a mild vanilla aroma. Deeper, there is stewed fruit and prunes. It's a rather hefty melange of aromas - none overpowering the others once the first blast of aroma is released.
Upon lighting, the vanilla comes out of hiding, mixed with a thick creamy smoke from the Latakia and Cavendish. The Latakia is fairly light here, but still noticeable. The red Virginia adds sweetness, the Burley adds body and nutty notes, and the Perique is understated, but makes itself known with a dark stone fruit flavor. Smoking the second bowl in a cob, the Perique seemed to come through a little stronger, and slightly peppery/spicy, while it was much more fruity/subdued in my cherry wood. It's definitely far less "aromatic" than its predecessor, but a fantastic well rounded blend. I'll certainly be ordering more of this. It's one of the better English crossover blends I've had, and I might like that it's more tobacco focused than STM. No bite, and light on the nic.
Shortcut To Mushrooms:
The vanilla topping is much stronger here, than in Bombadil. The vanilla cavendish they used is very similar in flavor to Sutliff Molto Dolce. It too has a thick and creamy smoke, but it's far less complex than the Bombadil. It's still a very enjoyable smoke, but I think Just for Him really built upon it for their new offering.
The nitty gritty:
If you're a fan of STM, you'll probably enjoy Bombadil. While they are only somewhat similar, I believe Bombadil would at least appeal to the same palate. It's worth trying, regardless. Just don't have any expectations that it's a 1:1 replacement for STM.
Addendum:
I wish my review was as eloquent, interesting, and entertaining as something @cosmicbobo might post, but alas, my wordsmithing and stream of consciousness is not quite as well honed as his. You're one of a kind, @cosmicbobo! I can say no more
