Does anyone know when Pelican tobacco was first offered up for sale? I am looking at buying a tin with some age on it but it seems too good to be true for the price and I want to check dates. There are no markings on the tin to help determine the age so I thought I would start at the beginning and go from there. Thanks!

No idea, but does it say Arango or Butera or something else at the bottom? And is there a black marker line through any text at the bottom? Those clues will at least help figure out a ballpark era.

Good thinking @delosbones. The earliest review was 2001. It also says originally blended by Germain, then McClelland (which I never knew!), the Stokkebye, and now Germain again.

Interesting. It says Butera 2oz Pipe company, made in Denmark. Thanks!

The most recent Butera Pelican tins have Arango at the bottom and no black line. They started tinning this way within the last 12 months as far as I'm aware.

The black line was apparently due to Germain inheriting a ton of labels from the Stokkebye era. Instead of reprinting, they drew a black line through "made in Denmark". So it appears you have indeed been offered an old tin - but on the other hand, since it was made by Stokkebye and not Germain or McC, I'm not sure how great it will be!
