It is with great sadness that I post this topic. Our good friend Tom Douglas passed away at 71 years of age, this past Saturday, in Florida. It seems he had an infection in his stomach, but I don't know much more than that, regarding what actually contributed to his death. He did have a history of heart and other health complications. I just spoke very briefly with his wife Joyce; you can imagine how she's doing. The impact Tom had on the pipe community is huge...beginning with an immense library of pipe knowledge through the pages of the Dr. Grabow Collectors Forum....his 25 years of service at the Grabow / Sparta pipe factory (where he retired in 1991)....his executive leadership over Mastercraft distribution for many years....and the pipe community in general. Tom was a real pipe man, grew up in tobacco country NC, and was simply a wealth of knowledge. He and I have tag-team arranged tours through the Sparta pipe factory many times, and my wife and I have been blessed to spend time with he and Joyce, and their little dog 'Buddy'. Tom also proudly served in the US military, and also served locally as City Manager in Sparta, NC, just to scratch the surface of his contributions far beyond the pipe community. I am grateful for his friendship, and I will sorely miss my annual visits with him up in Piney Creek and Sparta. Your prayers for his wife Joyce will be much appreciated. For those of you who knew him...that's Ed James (Ozark Southpaw), with Tom's arm on his shoulder. Ed and Tom have been my 2 largest influences, as related to the very small amount of pipe knowledge I posess, as well as the pipe restoration I do.

Sorry to hear the new, Joe. It's always tougher when a mentor of sorts passes away.

Another very special piper is gone. I guess some of us are at that age where we loose more friends than we can make. Condolences to his wife and family.

Wow Joe. So sorry to hear this news.
It was indeed a pleasure to have met him @ the Dr. Grabow Factory tour back in 2017.
Sympathies and prayers for Tom's family.

Tom will be missed. His inside stories from Sparta were always a highlight on the forums.
I fired up a Continental Westbrook last night gifted to me by Tom, in his honor. Smoked his custom made blend he sent me.
A little insight into what a classy guy he was:
When I received the Westbrook from Tom, I kept smelling the bowl. It was spot on the same smell I remember from my grandfather’s pipes. I messaged him and told him about the childhood memories that brought back. I said I wasn’t going to smoke it, I wanted to keep the bowl note. Less than a week later, I received a surprise in the mail from Tom. It was his custom blend with that wonderful aroma. I believe he said it was half Carter Hall and half Prince Albert. A message soon followed from Tom simply saying, now you can smoke it.
