What does everyone do with their pipes and baccy if they're flying? I gotta take 4 pipes and several bags of different tobacco, and this is the first trip I'm bringing pipe stuff with me. All advice is welcome!

I just bring a cob and one tobacco. I dont smoke much while traveling. I do plan on getting a hard shell pipe case to bring on flights so I won't be scared of my pipe being destroyed.

I typically bring my Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack for carry on stuff, the 6 pipe bag fits in it nicely along with extra tins and snuff.

I was thinking of putting in my shoulder bag. 2 of the pipes are presents, so I wanna make sure they don't get broken. I'm gonna pull the stems out. I plan on wrapping the pipes in cloth, and putting my tobacco in some smaller zip-lock bags. I guess I'm just wondering if they've given anyone a problem about it. I know lighters and matches and tampers are out of the question.

Soft flame lighters be they bic or Zippo are fine... matches ok. Never had a problem with Czech tools. The Zippo portable fuel vial is not TSA approved, if they open it.... “It has pipe cleaner fluid in it”... the liquid amount is way below 2 Oz... worst case scenario I would have them dump the fuel.... pipe cleaner.
Just have it all in a pipe bag of sorts, and in the bag, I wouldn’t carry my Czech tool in my pocket.
No torch lighters.

By plane that’s where my Falcon & Kirsten Pipes come in handy wrapped well in my luggage with my tobacco. If I travel to NY by car anything and everything goes 👌👍👍

I put them wrapped in towels in my hold bag. I don't want to take the risk with Czech tools or the tobacco.

Flying international in a few months (USA, Korea, and the Philippines), so this is a timely thread. Would never have guessed a Czech tool would raise an eyebrow, but we live in a collective society of fear, I guess. I live dangerously. I'll risk it.
My concern is security seeing pipes and tobacco in the x-ray of a carry on and having to explain, "No, people still smoke tobacco in pipes, open it up and smell it, it's not marijuana.... then having to wait for a supervisor to be able to tell the 'agent' the difference between tobacco and Mary Jane," all while trying to fit it into layover times.
Figured a lighter and/or matches would be a no-go. I may live dangerously, but I'm no fool. I'll buy a Bic and a pocket knife (because men carry pocket knives, duh) when I'm overseas.

There is the disclaimer:
“The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint.”
So they have the disclaimer to cover them, I have had my stuff looked at a few times, but it only took a minute or so, never had pipes handled or tobacco opened.

Truthfully I took several pipes and tobacco to California and it was a waste! I only smoked 3 pipes of the six I took and 3 different tobaccos of the ten I took. The advise I would give, other than the gift stuff just a few pipes and tobaccos for yourself. JMHO

You can have exactly one lighter, and it has to go with you in the cabin, not checked luggage. Soft flame only, no torches. Kitchen matches, with the red/brown ignition strip on the box, are ok. Strike-anywhere (survival) matches are strictly forbidden. czech tools are ok. Pipe knives are forbidden. security will not be freaked out by pipes or tobacco. (they see loose tobacco all the time for RYO smokers)

I have to fly internationally for work so I have explored the rules on smoking materials quite thoroughly

I have everything packed in my book bag/knapsack (whatever they're called these days). I'm bringing the Czech tool. If they don't like it, they can have it.

I travel a good deal for work including international; four times to Europe this year; 1,000,000 mile status on Delta.
In my checked bag, I put a full bag of pipe cleaners, a folding plastic pipe stand, a container or two of extra tobacco, and a spare pipe nail.
In my carry on backpack, in a two pipe stiff leather case, I have two pipes, a pipe nail, and some pipe cleaners. Then in a combo tobacco pouch/one pipe soft leather pouch, I have tobacco, a pipe, a pipe nail, and some pipe cleaners. Also, in my carry on is a Bic lighter.
None of the above has ever triggered a check from my bag being X-rayed. Also, note that I travel with pipe nails even though I use a Czech tool at home.
Once, when I was carrying on my roller bag, I had my spare tobacco in half pint mason jars. When the TSA agent pulled one of them out of my bag, he barely glanced at it and asked me "pipe tobacco?" And put it back.
My rule of travel is to never take anything that I would totally regret losing. My really good pipes stay home. Also, I don’t try and take a big variety of tobacco with me. For multi-day domestic trips, I only take one or two blends with me. For longer international trips, I take three blends with me. I’ve gone to Europe for two weeks with only 3 pipes and 3 blends of tobacco many times just fine. It does take some travel experience to gauge what is too little to take and too much to take.
