I was warned by several members that Pipes that were old, 1913 certainly qualifies, can have catastrophic events. Some have been known to crack and others totally split. It’s been killing me as to what to do and I made up my mind this week would be its maiden smoke. Humidity has been very high all week so I removed it from its case so it would hopefully soak some up. I chose some 2011 Esoterica Dorchester with a slightly moister feel than I would normally use and it smokes perfectly so far, will know if it made a decent protective coating shortly. banjo

Success, at least 90% coverage and a splendid 1st smoke, only wish the maker were known! It’s a mixture of snow with some rain. banjo

bambooshank Banjo, is that a Rhodesian? Its a beautiful looking pipe, and, any markings on it at all? Just curious...

Rhodesian= Round shank... R for round Bulldog= Diamond shank... ( I think I am right) trailboss Thanks Charlie. Sometimes I'm misled by the two carved rings near the top of the bowl, and have totally forgotten the diamond/oval shank indicators

Thanks all and yes the bowl is reminiscent of a Rhodesian but as has been noted Diamond Shank equals Bulldog, given the hallmark on the silver work is 1913 I’d say they didn’t depart much like today in what we refer to as a classic shape. Sadly the only other hallmark, or markings, are probably the silversmiths, D&G, no luck finding either a pipe company nor a silversmith to hang that to but the leather case is quality as is the pipe, a shame not to know more than that, cheers all. banjo

Congratulations on your first successful smoke with the 1913 pipe.
