Sometimes you'll get lucky with the basket pipes and they will be good smokers, other times not. IMHO, I'd rather have a few more MM Cobs and tobacco than another basket pipe. As for "high dollar pipes" ... it's more about the artistic / aesthetic than being that much better of a burner. Good luck and enjoy!

Short answer : I would get a few cob pipes and maybe another basket pipe to figure out what type of pipe I enjoyed before spending the money on a few "higher grade" pipes .
Long answer : When I started smoking 10plus years ago I bought several pipes, all I could get my hands on. Now I own a few of those because of sentimental value but sold most of them. The reason is what I thought I liked to smoke pipe wise (shape, size, material) and what I actually prefer to smoke was completely different.
I believe it would benefit you to own maybe a couple of basket pipes, and a few Missouri Meerschaum Corn cob pipes. Again not going crazy on quantity. It is a long journey for most to figure out what they like. Not saying the journey is not part of the fun, just saves trouble having pipes that you do not enjoy smoking as you would if a small amount of patience can be practiced.
And welcome

There's nothing wrong with loving that briar and I have too many. LOL However, the price to good smoking ratio is hard to beat with an MM Cob ... go for the wood plugged ones, btw.

If saving money is the point, the quality of smoking you get from a cob is the best bang for the buck. It is the smoke of a "high end" pipe, IMO.

Cobs are great smokers and as you can see from a few threads (cob modification) you can do things to your cob pipe to make them look as good as a high end pipe. Here is a country gentleman that was stained and had a glaze put on it. Information as how to do it is in the thread.

Totally depends on what's in the basket you're looking at! I have a handful of basket pipes I bought in the 70's, and they are all fine to excellent. Most recently found a couple of Parkers in a basket, one in London, the other in Edinburgh.

Totally depends << Snipped bits out >> Oh, darn. Did I hit Quote instead of Edit?? Trying to learn the ropes...
Cobs? Some swear by them, but they are not for me. Mileage varies greatly!

You can get yourself a MM Country Gentleman from Amazon for $10.95....great pipe at a very cheap price. One of mine has 2,500 plus smokes and still going strong.
Keep your eyes open on eBay for a good buy on an Estate pioe, bargains are still out there👍👍

I'd echo what's been said. Cobs are great for starting. They take abuse and can be modified to your heart's content.

I've found, over 46+ years, that most basket pipes are good smokers. It's just that the grain or the drilling is not perfect.

I don't know about now but smoke shops used to have a basket sitting on the counter. It would have cheap pipes in it..Thus the term Basket Pipes.

Just starting I would go with cobs and save my money for finding that tobacco profile I like.90% of my pipes are estate pipes that I got off ebay.A Dr Grabow would be fairly cheap, either at a walgreens or online.Myself,I look on the bay for groups of pipes cheap,$10 to $15 for 5 or more pipes.Clean and keep the ones I like and pass the others to friends or family that are interested. I do clean them for them.I also will open up the draught, most older pipes can be crudded up or drilled a bit tighter than some aros will allow.

Start out slow until you know you are going to stick with it. Get another basket pipe, some Missouri Meerschaum cobs, or a Dr. Grabow or two to give you about 5-7 pipes to rotate among days. That will give them time to dry out. Once you get the feel of what pipe shapes you like, save up and get a good name brand in the shape(s) you like.

Of the cheap briar pipes, Molina is a good brand. I have five of them ranging in price from $20 to $50 and they all smoke great and light on the wallet. They also were nice in getting to experiment in styles to see what is more to my liking.

The briar may feel better in your hand than a cob, but that's not all that pipe-smoking is about. Give a cob a try some day. But for now, if briar is what you want, get it.
I recommend whatever shape you like most from either the Morgan Pipes Bones line or the Rossi Vittoria line.
Pipes from either line can be had for less than $50. Many experienced smokers who also own more expensive pipes are pleased with their pipes from these two budget lines...myself included.

Picked up a bag of 10 seconds/baskets for $80.00. They were found at the Vegas Pipe Show. Haven't had issues with the ones I have smoked this far.

Sounds like the OP did well
The only bit of advice I’d give when starting out, is to not buy too many pipes. Even ‘cheap’ cobs and estate pipes can add up - if you buy a lot of them. I have far too many of these. If I knew that back then, I would’ve saved the money spent on them & applied it to an artisan made custom pipe. This would be after I had a couple years of experience and a better idea of what I liked in a pipe.

That's a bit dated! Not sure you could get any of those even at the top end of that range except on deep discount.

I have gotten Brakner, 52 Dunhill, Pre-Republic Peterson, BBB, Saseini four dot, etc... all at the average price of $10 apiece... shopping locally, not fleabay.

Are you saying I am uneducated? It is true I overlooked/forgot the word "estate" in the quote, so that was just my stupidity.
I was maintaining that you'd be hard pressed to find a new pipe of those "higher quality" marques in that price range, especially the higher quality pipes made by those firms.
