I used to smoke a fair amount of Kendal Kentucky, but I stopped smoking it because I couldn't get the stuff to stay lit. I don't have this problem with flakes or ribbons - I guess it's a shag thing. Any tips on smoking shag tobacco? All I can think of is to try compressing it less when I fill the bowl. I'll try that a few times, but I was wondering what the forum has to say.

I just smoked a shag tonight, Esoterica Margate and I love shag because of this blend. I packed loosely and wow what flavor. Don't be afraid to tamp firmly after charring light and it just takes off.

I smoke some shags - Five Brothers, Kendal Kentucky, Three Sails, and Margate. I pack them on the loose side and then tamp moderately once it's going. Be sure it is dry enough to smoke before loading. You might try completing the charring light, tamping flat and let it sit for a while before relighting.

With a shag cut, I like to dry it well and pack firmly. The tighter pack helps it to not burn so fast. My favorites include GH Dark Birdseye, 5 Brothers and Semois Reserve du Patron.

I found a tighter pack helps with shag too. Otherwise it burns too fast for me.

Years ago, when I first smoked a shag, I packed it too loosely. That made it burn too quickly, causing a hot & harsh tasting smoke. I haven’t really experienced problems with a shag burning. You might experiment & let it dry a bit more.

I find shags burn like a hay rick hit by lightning unless they're pretty moist, In Which case they have to be loose packed to burn because they clump. But when pretty dry, they need to be tightly packed or the bowlful is burnt before the first match goes out!

I'm in the dry it thoroughly, pack loosely camp but that's what I do with any cut. Whatever works best for you is the way to go.

Can't add more than has already been given in the way of advice...which ever way works best for you...that is the way to do it.
