I recently got some estate pipes and have a few that smell and taste of perfume. I reamed the bowls and performed regular cleaning and the the smell still lingers. I tried the salt and alcohol treatment to no avail. Are these pipes done for or is there something else to try that might work?

Hello Lakelands! I've had a few Ebay pipes that I swear if you burned them, the ashes would still smell that way. Lucky for me, I dont mind it.

Seal them in a baggie with most tobacco, the less flavor topped the better. Check it every few days. Oh, and stuff the bowl with that tobacco while at it

This stuff is so bad the box the pipes were in smelled of it. It's pretty strong and I'm lucky it only got a few of the pipes. The only thing bumming me out is one of them is a nice Peterson.

The Great Satan is Captain Black / Lane 1q. I come bearing good news and bad:
- The good:
The ghost can be exorcised!
- The bad:
After a good session with the pipe retort, the only way to dispose of an unwanted pipe ghost is to smoke the Captain into oblivion.
Lakeland ghosts are relatively pleasant to smoke into oblivion. Perfume is much less intrusive on my normal smokes than the ghost of the dread Captain. But I've found no more reliable mode than smoking that sucker to death. On an estate pipe, I always do a salt and alcohol treatment before even attempting to smoke it. If there's a distinct "ghost," I resort to the retort. If it's still ghosted post-retort, there's no way around but through.

Try stuffing the bowl with activated charcoal powder, remove the stem, and bake it in the toaster oven for about 5 hours at 180F. Wrap it in a washcloth first to keep the direct heat off it. Let it sit for 2 days before putting the stem back in (it'll be tight).

I’ve used a high proof rum a few different times with briar that’s been through the Lakeland mill. Soak the briar for 24 to 36 hours, dry completely and this has always worked for me. I ONLY smoke Lakeland tobacco’s in cheap Cob pipes now for this reason alone........the smell.

You've got a nice number of options here. Let us know which one you try and report back on the results.

You've got a nice number of options here. Let us know which one you try and report back on the results. OK, Here we go. All the pipes had salt and alcohol treatment. I have a Perretti that had the salt and alcohol treatment and this worked for this one. Nice smoker. A Peterson is packed with some captain black white and being stored in a zip lock full of it. An unnamed billiard style is packed with coffee grounds and is stored in a coffee can with grounds in it. I'd like to try the rum but being I haven't had a drink in 10 1/2 years it's too tempting to have it around. If the smell still persists I will send them in for an ozone treatment.

Lots of great suggestions.
I may get an ozone generator to remove party ghosting from my house after my friends visit.

Isopropyl should be ok, I'd think. I don't drink either, and I've used it with no ill effects.

I think I have exorcised the Demon!!! I was thinking about using baking soda since it is used to remove odors from a fridge so if I packed a pipe with it it might work. I then realized I have a soda blast cabinet and took the worse pipe and blasted all the crud completely out of it. The smell seems to have left because I can't smell it anymore. The only drawback is I didn't tape the outside so I had to blast the finish off and will refinish it if it still smells OK.

I smoke Lakelands and perfume is not what I would call the ghost. A bit floral maybe, but not crossing the line over. That being said, a friend gave me a Pioneer Calabash once that had heavy perfuming and I discovered that it belonged to one of her relatives and was used for marijuana. Another family member soaked the meerschaum bowl with perfume to attempt to mask the smell.

My cohort I spoke about in another post lucked into a first Generation Orvis Glass Minnow Trap in the original wooden slide top crate. The glass trap was near mint and hardly ever found this way, the crate had been stored in the garage and soaked up all kinds of oil and the outside lettering was nearly illegible and he was bummed because the condition of the crate would somewhat diminish the value of the trap with the crate. I told him pick up a 50 lb bag of unscented kitty litter and some giant heavy duty trash bags. Triple up the trash bags and lay in 4-6” of the kitty litter then place in the crate and begin piling the kitty litter to it, once he had a few inches over the top place the lid on top and empty the bag of litter on top then seal each bag individually and place them out of the way and leave everything alone for a minimum of 30 days. When the time was up he was shocked to see a reasonably clean box with writing completely legible and he’s kept the kitty litter in case it was ever needed. The stuff is great for removing musty odors and oils, never tried it on a pipe but might some day, he did very well selling that trap though. banjo

This is why a good forum of knowledgeable folks is indispensable.
I have an offensive Big Ben that's been giving me fits and now I have a few more ideas to throw at it, including sending it off for a professional treatment. I have numerous salt/cotton ball rounds on it both with 91% iso and rum, but have not tried coffee grounds or plain tobacco... I can get a bag of Golden Harvest for a few bucks down the street and coffee grounds are, well, coffee grounds. I'm not experienced/knowledgeable enough of tobaccos to know if this just ghosting from a strong blend or if it was not taken care of by a previous owner, because all I can smell is a dirty ashtray.
Thank you for giving me hope as I was on the verge of sending it back out the door.
