Hello all,
Just signed up as this seems like the place with the most activity these days and I am finding a lot of great information here. I have been an occasional cigar smoker for the past ~6 years ranging from 3-4 per month to 3-4 per week. I was turned on to cigars by some neighbors and very quickly found a lot about them to like. A couple years ago I picked up a corn cob and some 1q at the suggestion from a buddy who I was directing toward better cigars then he was trying (from ghurkas, bleh, to Crowned Heads). I was blown away by the flavors I got out of the pipe versus even my favorite cigars. Unfortunately I struggled with packing, keeping it lit, and wound up jumping around with different tobaccos and types so much that the first two problems got even worse. Eventually put the pipes down and hadn't touch them for a few years.
I just recently picked the pipe back and up, armed with a healthy amount of 1q for consistency and I think I found my stride. Packing and lighting has become second nature (at least with 1q) and I am getting consistent flavor throughout the bowl. I also can smoke the pipe on my commute in my car without the wife even making a comment about lingering smell (again, sticking with 1q in the car too).
I think I am over the cliff so far the cigars are about to go up for sale (save for some of my favorites). Yes I get a lot of satisfaction out of a good cigar, but to be honest the flavors I get are hidden in the background so far vs pipes. Another thing is the cost of cigars vs pipes....no contest here (I am fine with cobs thus far). Also, the ability to set a pipe down and pick it back up hours later with no detriments. And finally the wife approval aspect. She would send me straight to the shower after a cigar but the other night I got a "you smell kind of manly" after a pipe (I think it was SG FVF too).
All in all the pipe has given me a level of relaxation and contemplation that I have grown to love.
I have gotten a pretty good selection outside of my go to 1q that I am dabbling with. Had a few bowls of Luxury Navy Flake that I liked, some nightcap that I was indifferent on, Lane BCA was good but about as one dimensional as it gets, autumn evening was good if I am in the mood for desert, SG FVF has potential if I can get the packing right (I finally dried it a bit and rubbed out the whole tin for the next try).
Looking forward to trying new blends and styles so expect a few questions from me in the near future.
Thanks for listening
