There's been mention of this in various threads, but I thought I'd ask straight up...
My brother in law is a cigar guy, but wants to try pipes. Now, I enjoy almost every style of pipe tobacco, so it's hard for me to make a decision on what to get him. Would you cigar guys mind sharing your experience, and what blends might be a good start? Ive been leaning towards some flavored stuff, a la Quiet Nights or Black Frigate. What would your suggestions be? Thanks for your help.

There are a few tobaccos that use cigar leaf, (eg GL Pease Rubosto). Maybe that's a place to start.

Get your brother in law a few ounces of C&D Billy Budd and Billy Budd Blonde. You’ll put a smile on his face 👌👍👍

I came over from cigars, the first 3 that really sang for me were Fusiliers Ration, Opus Magnum and some aged Ten Russians. How strong of a cigar he prefers may have a influence.

I would go with some good pipe tobacco. The logic being that if he enjoys premium cigars, a half-arsed cigar inspired pipe baccy may just seem like a mediocre cigar in a pipe.
Shock and awe with some good VaPer and English blends.

If he smokes a strong cigar pirate cakes are good Latakia blend some Navy flake or some Bullseye flake you can't go wrong with 965 but I definitely wouldn't do flavored. Good luck in your search I'm sure whatever you provide will be wonderful

First tin I fell in love with after smoking cigars for 8 years was Dunhill London Mixture, 965 and Nightcap. The first 2 were great. I use to smoke strong Cubans before Russia stop subsidizing and Nightcap gave me some relief.

I still love my cigars, and Nightcap is a topper on my list.PS LTF and LNF and the Bullseye coins are also in there.Just about any English blend, and orientals.I do like my CB blends and Cult BRM, but the others are more of an everyday joy for me.

I think it depends on what type of cigars he likes. If it is Connecticut wrapper cigars I would steer towards straight virginia types maybe va/pers. If it is heavier maduro cigars then you could go into a more robust blends with a bit of latakia.
I think a bigger thing to consider over flavor profile is picking a blend that is easy to pack and smoke. Something that stays lit easily and that isn't effected too much by cadence.
I will definitely echo staying away from highly topped aros as a few of those turned me off in the beginning. However, a good ol faithful like 1q shouldn't push away most folks.
I am actually contemplating this dilemma myself as I am going to have a pipe night at my house for my Sunday cigar group where I pick up a bag of cob seconds and a few blends for folks to try out. They are becoming more and more intrigued as I have made the conversion almost completely to pipes.

OK, here's what I bought:
Comoy's Cask #2 GLP Telegraph Hill Sutliff Crumble Kake English #1 Arango Balkan Supreme
I figure - two of each Va/Per and English ribbon style, to get him going, and two pressed blends to help him realize the greatness.

i'm glad they didn't kick you out. You'll need to think of a new name for the group. I am sure a few of them will have plenty of colorful things to say as we have a few of the typical machismo type. But I have been surprised with how receptive most of them have been when I explain how I am getting much more out of pipes than I ever got out of cigars. Plus the flexibility of pipes vs cigars (setting a pipe down, half bowls, cheaper, more flavors, etc) really intrigues them.

Just as a side note:
Cigar leaf = air cured, low sugar
Burley = air cured, low sugar Virginia = flue cured, high sugar Turkish = air/sun cured, medium-low sugar
So, if someone likes cigars, it makes sense to me to point them to a good Burley blend. I've only smoked one cigar ever that was made with Latakia and it's called the Spectre ... WAY different than a normal cigar.

He's not my favorite person, but I figure all I can do is show him love, regardless of our differences.

I'm HOPING to knock his socks off with the flavors of pipe tobacco with a completely different flavor than what's he's used to, while staying in the realm of unflavored blends. AND, not that I don't love me some burley (and I do), but it CAN be on the cigarette spectrum, flavor wise - and he HATES cigarettes.

Modern day cigarettes are MOSTLY Virginia, not Burley.

Color me goofy, but I don't want a Cigar Experience/flavor with my pipes. Nor do I want a Bourbon experience with my Single Malt Scotch.
I smoke / imbibe purely for the singularly unique enjoyment of what I'm consuming at that time.
So, that being said, I'd encourage you to select a few different blends, not excluding Carter Hall or Prince Albert, as well as a good English and a good VaPer.
Just my $0.02

that's true, but I've gotten distinct cigarette flavors from, say PA, or Five Brothers. Which, I enjoy (not so much the PA). I just wanted something totally different than cigar flavors. Maybe I should get him a good Burley. Tin recommendations?
