Basically I got tired of repairing stems, so about 5 years ago I started using rubber bits. Took some time to get use to, but now I much prefer. On some pipes they fit well, on others they have a tendency to slide and honestly kind of on the thin side. I had to recently purchase a new stem for one of my MM Dagner Design Cob Poker Pipes ( hole through the stem ) and decided to go to Home Depot and find a better material and cut mine to size. The fact is I clench my pipes 95% of the time and my bottom tooth is extremely sharp and can do some serious damage to any stem material. I purchased a 10’ roll of clear tubing for $4.93 from Home Depot. The OD is 1/2” and ID is 3/8”. Even fits your cheaper Cobs, just use a hairdryer to shrink to your liking. They are extremely comfortable and don’t slide......I’m now a much happier piper👌👍👍👍 Below are two examples........PS.....cut with a sharp cleaver knife or razor blade utility knife.

I was seriously thinking about this the other night. I recently started using my rubber bits again. They take some getting used to but it beats chatter Mark's. I've almost chewed through my 2 cobs.

I have been using tubing for quite a while now. I prefer the feel to my teeth than the rubber and they can fit different style stems. I dip in boiling water for a bit which makes a better cut with scissors. I stretch the piece with the scissors while in the boiling water and they slide right on. They tighten as they cool.

Call me nuts, but I'd rather replace The stem than feel like I have a garden hose in my mouth

With these rubber tips you’ll never damage another Cob stem. Also, they are very comfortable to bite down on, or gum them to death....lol.

There is a video on YouTube where someone uses black heat shrink tape the kind that you used to splice wires together. It comes in different sizes. Just apply it to the stem use your lighter the heat will shrink it and will form perfectly around the stem, if you need to replace it just cut it off or heat it and it'll split and then apply a new one.

I’ve tried heat shrinkable a few years ago. The material is to thin and it’s possible to still damage a stem...I did on a few.

Call me nuts, but I'd rather replace The stem than feel like I have a garden hose in my mouth Though desperately needed there’s no way I can tolerate rubber bits. I sincerely wish there was a better solution to protect my pipe stems. AJ

I actually watched a YouTube video of this exact thing this morning. I think I'm gonna head to Home Depot and pick up some tubing to give it a try

Having worn full dentures for over 30 years now I don't clench my pipes anymore so thankfully my bits don't get chewed up as much so the need for either rubber or vinyl bit covers is not for me!

What you guys have to do is remember that ya don't chomp on a pipe stem the way you would a cigar
