"Hippies" never referred to themselves as "Hippies". That was another dumb-arse media designation. I know. I was there. It was a term coined by San Francisco Chronicle journalist Herb Caen. I didn't like it. No one I knew did... but we were too high to do anything about it! Keep on truckin'...

That was my problem, I married an ex-hippie in 2002. Her brain was “ fried “ as far as common sense, though very intelligent. Still moved like those “ hippie bunnies “ did back in the day.....lol. She had serious issues dealing with reality. Our life together was “ all about her “! When I became ill in 2011 and was not there for me, by 2012 I wanted a legal separation than divorce. From the last day I saw her on March 23rd of 2014 I never looked back.......didn’t even say goodbye.

I remember the first time we saw "Hippies" in Houston. We were taking inventory in a small grocery store in the Montrose neighborhood, and FOUR of them come strolling in. What they must have thought of us following them around the store staring at them like a bunch of hicks. I was 17, so 1967.

I had the pleasure of teaching High School Psychology, Sociology and History in 1967. Had in for our student body some of the folks who put on Woodstock...Artie Kornfeld, Michael Lang and a few others...also had the local BDAC (Bureau of Drug Abuse Control) Feds. come in and talk about the dangers of amphetamines...that was the big thing back then particularly for truck drivers who were eating them like candy to be able to stay on the road. Some very heady times back then.

Cool - what was the name of your band? Please tell me it was something psychedelic involving food, like Peanut Butter Conspiracy, or Vanilla Fudge!

The first time I saw a hippie was my cousin Ron, he was also a member of an outlaw motorcycle club called Rosemary’s Babies.... they were rough as they come. I had heard something went down big time with the club, and he made a hasty exit.... saw him years later at the family reunion with a hot wife, he was cleaned up and doing taxidermy.
Years later, my sister told me to watch Dateline NBC: “Mystery at Chalk Creek”, that same cousin was a Sheriiff department detective tasked with solving a homicide.
Some people lived it and moved on, some burned out.

Yeah, I talked to a medical researcher at ASU, and he spoke about the study of the people that “dropped out”, but came back to live normal lives, they were attempting to figure out what the health related issues visiting some older people, and how it related to drug use in the days of their youth.

I’ve seen death, but the one that stands out in the hippie days after coming back from S Asia, I had a friend, came from wrong side of tracks, hell raiser, owned his own welding rig, did drugs, rode a Harley, one morning I get a call, Johnny is dead, thinking the drugs did him in, Sheriffs deputy says Bradley his family is gone cane you come down and identify him. Taking a deep breath I say yea, where is he, he’s by the post office I’ll pick you up. We went and their was the most bizarre scene, Johnny was wrapped around a fire hydrant, got tooted and rose hell for leather Into the fire hydrant.

Not saying it was anything like the 60s, but the early-mid 90s were somewhat similar... One night my teeth turned to metal, melted together, and there were beer commercials on a TV that was turned off. I was definitely dead, I was the only one who knew it, and I was permanently sentenced to remain in that state forever. The only thing that fixed the situation we're glow-in-the-dark stars on my buddy's ceiling that I found I could direct traffic with.
