Hard to believe we were so young back then. Went over to the Univ. of Vietnam in '68 to do graduate work in death and distruction, did a lot of those funny little green Egyptian mentholated cigs as Dav Von Ronk called 'em over there. It definatley was a "long strange trip" back then !

"Hippies" never referred to themselves as "Hippies". That was another dumb-arse media designation. I know. I was there. It was a term coined by San Francisco Chronicle journalist Herb Caen. I didn't like it. No one I knew did... but we were too high to do anything about it! Keep on truckin'... Is it safe to say the sixties were good to you? I made a humorous note before and was flamed..😁

We'll start a club and scare the hell out of everyone! I wouldn't think that would be illegal in SF, but the weather is against it.

I lived through those years in and around SF, except for one year in Washington D.C. where there was also a small Counterculture movement. Lost way too many friends to drugs and the war. I was too conservative and not groovy enough to be a Hippy but actively worked against the government and their war. Always had a job which were easy to find with the war on. Worked in construction for a few years and then security for California's largest bank with a team of retired cops. That changed my world view and kept me well grounded.

My dad flew back from Vietnam, flew into San Francisco to be processed through the Oakland Army base. No hippies showed up to spit on him and his buddies, had they done so, they would have quickly realized they failed victim selection 101.

The late Sixties were very good to me. I had pocket money, new car, good friends and family. I traveled widely in Mexico and I got a wider view of the world and met some fantastic people. I spent most of the summer of 69 living in a shack on Galveston Bay with my buddy working weekends and spending the weekdays exploring, fishing, drinking beer, Everclear with grape Kool-aid, partying with the local girls whose dad's worked for NASA, etc. I always observed the braver, (dumber) people who tested treats before I chanced swallowing them. I expanded my mind and horizons. And I thrived.

First time I saw a hippie was when I born and looked up at my mom ("that explains a lot" many of you are thinking.... ) You're a bit left of Che Guevara, but we love you anyway, Chico! Kidding of course, I always enjoy your posts and perspective. Merry Christmas, my friend!

My recollection is that mostly those guys were on the receiving end of a few beers and some Joints. The summer of 1969, I worked at Travis AFB building Base housing. Certainly met my share of soldiers and Airmen coming home.
