So I'm packing my things, getting ready for the move from London over to Northern Ireland. I'm freaking out ever so slightly (hahaha !!!)
Please tell me you're tales of heroic sucess at the last minute in such endeavours, or your funny tales of what's happened to you.
Failing that, can you please find me a straight jacket and a rubber room at a good price?

Good luck with your move, it’s not so bad. I had the pleasure of traveling to 77 Countries with my job, a few I ended up staying for a year to three. I have no regrets, I kind of miss those hectic days. Now it’s basically me here with my pipes and tobacco’s. I’m finding more and more each day the only time you hear from family is when they need you, just how much of that I’ll tolerate I really don’t know!
The BIGGEST mistake was moving to NC once I became ill, one learns fast from his/her mistakes!!! Next big move for my will be to Lindenhurst, NY .....where my plot is or off to Israel if I felt better. Again, one day at a time!!!

I find 3 good moves equals one house fire in terms of getting rid of stuff you don't need. I do have one funny story that happened to my sister. Her husband got a sales job and they moved from Ohio to Kentucky. They buy a house and the movers are unloading the moving van into the house when he gets a phone call from the company saying the realigned the territories and we need you to move to Iowa. So they owned that house for one month and moved to Iowa.
I guess one more . . . in the early 90's I had a consumer software product idea. So I moved back from Atlanta to Raleigh and worked myself hard. Like 7 day week from Feb to Nov and would go out with friends only once a month. My software was in beta and I took a needed vacation bus touring Europe. My product was for CompuServ users. When I was in Europe, Microsoft divested in AOL. Then Microsoft announces MSN. Then CompuServe drops their hourly price. I get home and some schmuck created a program called Mosaic and then renamed it to Netscape Navigator. Writing was on the wall so I called my marketing guy, lawyer and accountant to tell them I am shutting down the company on Monday. I then called a recruiter for a consulting firm in Atlanta that I was available. He had been trying to get me for years. He said come down for the interview on Wednesday. So Tuesday I drive down, interview Wednesday, get the offer Thursday, accept and find an apartment. Friday I abandon my car and fly back to Raleigh. Rent a UHaul truck Saturday and load up. Drive to Atlanta with my stuff and move in Sunday and start the new job Monday. Good times.

We drop semi trailers at residences, the customer uses whatever portion of the trailer they need, and when done, they put up the moveable bulkhead... we load freight behind it.
One family had decided that they were going to leave their cat with family back in Missouri, on moving day the cat disappeared. When they took the bulkhead down at the destination point, out strutted Morris the cat! Thank God they didn’t use the long term storage option.

A buddy of mine bought a home that was foreclosed upon, the problem was that the foreclosed upon owner still had all of his crap in the house and was dragging his feet on moving it all. My buddy Mike had a bunch of us there to help on moving day with the expectation that this guy would be gone.
Foreclosed Freddy was dragging his arse in moving his stuff, and he was using the smallest Uhaul truck to shuttle his crap. It became obvious that the guy was cherry picking all of the best of his belongings and was going to leave my buddy with a bunch of crap to haul to the dump.
I asked foreclosed Freddy, “would you like us to help you move?” Mike looked at me with a WTH? Look.
I started singing the chorus of “Make me a blessing” as I carried bags of hardened concrete, pails of paint, and broken furniture into his truck, everyone else caught on and started doing the same... now it was Foreclosed Freddy that had the WTH? Look and Mike had a Cheshire Cat grin.

Moving out of my VA home, first one too, we upgraded as they say nowadays, wife and I brought boxes of our move and left to get another load. Unbeknownst to us the previous owner had called salvation army and said they could have boxes under garage which was an open garage where we had left ours, fortunately we arrived just in time as a Salvation Army truck was loading the last of our boxes. That’s the only time in my life I had to get huffy with the Salvation Army, we were lucky as we would have never known. Oh this was in day where Porch Pirates and other crap in human nature was not so bold. Looking back it’s a laugh , but moving is the Pitts. Moving out of this home is another story.

When I returned from Hawaii, the Housing Authority had instructed me that the movers would be at my residence at 0800.I had to be there to supervise the boxing and loading of my household goods.I could offer them coffee, drinks, and lunch if I wanted. But under no circumstances was I to give them or allow them beer or alcohol. So being the "Good Infantryman" that I was,I had two cases of Budweiser waiting for when they finished.Had to stop them from loading the stuff on my neighbors lanai. All my stuff and a few extras arrived safely, ahead of schedule, and packed tight as a drum with no breakage.Amazing what you can get done with a little bit of "grease".

I've not got any fun stories about moving. I'll more than likely be moving some time in the 2019/2020 academic year so I'll feel your pain soon enough.
All i can can say is that I'll be waiting for you for a pipe and a pint!

Like Martin, I'd rather chew my arm off first...fortunately we own the home we're in. So the only move will be when I'm dead...and that will be to the dump.

My rule of thumb has always been never have too much shite you can't move with a long bed pick up. In my 20s, the Army and college, one trip would do the job. Multiple trips were required later but I could still make it happen in a pick up.
When I made my last move in April, and I mean my last until I'm carted off to assisted living or worse, I had a book shelve I wanted to keep. I thought it would ride upright - Bad move. I went over a RR track, felt and heard a bad sound. I didn't even stop because I just wanted to get there and get it done. Long story short, book shelf fell over on top of the cab, crushed the cargo light and put a permanent imprint in the top of the cab of the 2016 F-150.
Dealership wanted $220 to replace cargo lamp. I found one on-line for $49 and took care of it myself. Dent in the cab is still there, shows character.

Not a bad way to operate. I learned my lesson in 2005.
I moved from California to Arizona, my two oldest were still in college in Arizona, and my youngest was in high school. I filled a 25' long Budget truck, every nook and cranny, and later 19 feet of a 28' semi trailer. When we bought a house none of the living room furniture worked in the new house, so after loading in Ca., paying the freight, unloading in Arizona, I sold it off at fire sale prices...next time it will be more of a minimalist move, we have boatloads of stuff that I plan on liquidating off over the next few years.

When you move, you find out who your real friends are. People seem to disappear when that time comes. However, I've helped many "friends" move that are no longer friends anymore.
I have no good stories, but thinking about it makes my back hurt...
I can fit all my "valuables" and my clothes in my car and disappear!

Not a funny story by any stretch. When I did move from California as I said I rented a Budget truck, I asked the salesman what would happen if I broke down. "Nothing to worry about, the truck you are getting has 500 miles on the odometer." I spent a day and a half filling every nook and cranny, got 10 miles out of town and the transmission blew up. I called them, and they had it towed 60 miles north (opposite direction) to an International dealership in San Jose. The load needed to be transferred, and the sales guy said "No worries we have a crack team to get on it. I was thinking that they would contract a moving company, right? No, it was the dregs of society that showed up, one guy had the teardrop tattoo on his face...crack team alright, I didn't know he was talking about lifestyle choices! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teardrop_tattooI am now going on 30 hours with no sleep and I have to ride herd on a bunch of dirtbags! Something happened as they flipped a dresser, and some silver coins fell out of my dresser...One of the guys hollered : "Dude!" in a manner that he had just struck paydirt...Eureka! in dirtbag talk! I kept an eye on them as best I could, so when they weren't loading sensitive stuff, I used the restroom, etc... When I unloaded in Arizona, I realized that they had set my latex mattress in an oil puddle at the truck facility, and it wicked up oil like Jim wicks up tobacco. A bedrail went through the tube of my 27' SonyTV enroute, and my oak furniture looked like a scriber's awl was taken to it...I had to stage it all for the claims guy, it was about $5,000.00 worth of damaged goods. What a pain in the arse. Any interstate moves in the future are on an ABF trailer, if the truck breaks down, unhook and put a new horse under it...and I don't have to drive it. That was a move from Hell, in more ways than one.

A few days after moving and a 'friend' asks why I didn't ask them for help- I tell them to suck it. They knew damn well I was moving and they just didn't care enough to help, so I payed strangers or did it myself.

I had been rode hard and put up wet one week, and the temps were running 110 degrees when a buddy that was needing to move needed help over the weekend, and I know he was pretty strapped for money...I went down to a day labor service where they say they vet the workers and I paid for a guy to help my friend, he appreciated it...said the guy really worked hard and was careful.

Oh man! That's made my move sound like bliss! Where are you in your move? Basically in the mopping up bit. Waiting for the courier to come and pick up what I'm shipping to Bangor. Tidying up the residual crap. Realising I need a bigger suitcase for the flight....all that fun stuff!
