I was looking at the meershaum pipes on smoking pipes, the ones around d $100 or so. Anyone have experience with these? Are they worth the money?
This would be my first meerschuam pipe.

Perhaps you can show a photo of same, at least a link.
I like meerschaums, and came away from the West Coast Pipe Show with three more. I don't think you can go wrong with SmokingPipes.

Make sure the Meerschaum pipe you choose is made from block, not pressed Meerschaum. Happy hunting 👍

Welcome to the Patch from central north Florida. If you get a meer, as Ted said, make sure it is block not pressed or any other way they try to sell it.

One thing you want to keep in mind with Meerschaum is that you drop a Briar on concrete, you end up with a ding or maybe broken tenon. You drop a Meer on concrete, there is the real possibility of having a broken pipe. Having said that, I like smoking my Meerschaum’s but exercise a bit more caution in that regard... I learned the hard way.

My experiments with cheap meers never went well. Baki is best but supposedly history in US. Altinok or IMP are the only others I'd recommend. Best of luck.

Smoking Pipes will stand behind any pipe that they sell, so good choice there. If you're looking on Ebay, some brands to look for, besides those that others have mentioned, are SMS and CAO. Be wary of the size of the pipe if shopping on Ebay; there are some dealers who sell very small meerschaum pipes and do not post the measurements or reveal that they are miniature pipes.

Both of my meers were about that price point and they’re both nice and smoke well. In addition to the excellent advice about block vs pressed and accurate measurements, I would suggest you verify it has a delrin tenon for ease of assembly/disassembly. I don’t think you could ask for a better seller either, FWIW.

They are fragile, but they smoke great! Buy the best one you can afford. If the $100.00 Meer is block it's probably ok in my opinion

Since Baki became unobtainium, the only thing you can do pay yer money and takes yer chances. One thing that I have learned the hard way is that the eBay pipes are never a bargain. Many were bought as souvenirs and I don't believe that they were ever intended to be smoked. I hope that you have great luck with this one.

If you're talking about the AKB pipes, they are block meerschaum and smoke great. I've had this AKB claw for a few years and it's been great.

I recommend Baki if you can find one. The next best meers are by Altinok and IMP. Either of those will be fine.
Meers are like tattoos. You are not likely to regret spending more money for better quality. While you will likely regret trying to go the cheap route.
Stay away from pressed meer, as has been suggested. Also, stay away from screw-in tenons.
Too many meers are made by people who are great carvers but not good pipemakers. So they make pretty meerschaum pipes that are terrible smokers.

What you see is what you can get unless you're in the Chinese market. Baki has committed his work to a Chinese distributor and that market is waaay too profitable for him to make his pipes available anywhere else right now.

My Picasso Baki Meer bought from the Fred Bass Collection, my Favorite I got one from his estate too, but it is a Peterson. I bet I paid a small fraction of what you paid for that fine smoking device.
