Did you really write a book on gothic literature, and if so what's it called? ... I have a Ph.D. in British Literature, and spent my life (up until my fairly recent retirement) as a professor at a state university. I am an old-fashioned literary historian with a particular interest in the history of ideas ... A scholar and a gentleman. Just as I suspected.

Did you really write a book on gothic literature, and if so what's it called? @chico --yes I did. I'm sure you will understand that I wish to remain anonymous on a public forum. But I have a Ph.D. in British Literature, and spent my life (up until my fairly recent retirement) as a professor at a state university. I am an old-fashioned literary historian with a particular interest in the history of ideas, as reflected in the novel--not really interested in poetry or drama--just the mix of ideas floating around. So everything I said in my long, rambling earlier post is true. I was just trying to have a little fun with Charlie by playing the role of Sherlock Holmes. In fact, many of the lines in my post were from the Holmes canon. I'm certain I have gone to a lot of trouble to only regret it later. As a fan of Sir Arthur since childhood, I thought your post was absolutely wonderful, by the way. I hope my stupid joke wasn't taken the wrong way. I was being sarcastic. And like Chico, my interest is peaked. haha You give me no choice but to research every volume on the subject as well as the respective authors. Don't worry, Batman. I won't disclose your identity when I find ya.

I won't disclose your identity when I find ya. No offense taken, Justin. I am not easily offended. I enjoy your sense of humor actually--somewhat understated and dry. Actually my response was intended as humor as well. I do find it interesting that language often fails to represent our intentions--especially written language absent of facial expressions and other non-verbal clues. I suppose that is why we have all these emoticons.

...still looks like "Gothic" to me... don't see how that third letter would be an "e"... Me too. Actually, the only letter I struggle with is the 4th. The "G" and "o" look identical to the ones in the Fraktur alphabet I posted. The "t" with its little "foot" is almost identical, it is just crossed a little higher that we are used to. The "i" has some strangeness at the top--I assume this is a representation of the diacritical mark called an umlaut (looks like a colon turned sideways) which is very commonly found over German vowels (and indicates a slight difference from the normal pronunciation of that particular vowel.) And the "c" is almost identical. This is a script type font and intended to mimic handwritten letters--so a high degree of variation is expected. Also, the fact that the word "gothic" indicates both a geographical location, as well as a stylistic sensibility seem to point to the pipe's French/German roots--especially that part of France which came under German control. I've never seen "gaelic" associated with anything other than Irish. It has been an interesting little problem and I have enjoyed looking at all this. Again, apologies to Charlie for sometimes taking this train off the intended track. It was unintentional.......

[quote timestam I do find it interesting that language often fails to represent our intentions--especially written language absent of facial expressions and other non-verbal clues. I suppose that is why we have all these emoticons. I've said this many times. Humour often does not come across in text. In fact a forum member and I just messaged each other about this to confirm we were both joking haha Everything I say is heavily dosed with sarcasm and self-depreciation. Many people read my messages and think I'm egotistical when in fact I'm the very opposite. I'm kind of like Chevy Chase in Fletch, albeit self-loathing. Haha

I vote for Golnic, a Slovenian surname. The reasons I went with "Golnic", too is because the third letter looks a lot more like an "L" than a "T". And there is nothing about that fourth letter that makes it look like an "H" to my eyes even after studying the font chart provided earlier in this thread. That supposed "H" looks way more like an "N" than an "H" no matter how many times I study it.

Okay, I'm gonna go with "Gothic". And I think those are just extra "serifs" that make the "T" and "I" look like "Ls"

I vote for Golnic, a Slovenian surname. Gregor Lobnik is the only Slovenian (classic) pipe maker that I know. Btw. this is how Slovenian traditional pipes look like...

I can see smoking those babies in the company of kings, dukes and earls. What kind of tobacco do you think those guys would smoke? Reminds me of a line from Cheers, as said by Coach: " How many pairs of socks do you think a guy like that has?"
