I was on another forum earlier today and posted a comment on a thread about insomnia. I mentioned that I could only smoke in the house at night because my yard in a popular place among the local wildlife. I have found tracks of black bear, wild boar, and mountain lion very close to my front door. Additionally I had an face to face meeting with a very large coyote a few years back that I have no desire to repeat.
My question is this: Any others in here not able to sit outside and enjoy a smoke at night for the same reason.

A sound piece of advice but with my luck I would wind up blowing the face off of one of the neighbors dogs that are forever running loose around here. Not that I like the neighbors enough to worry about them feeling bad if I did, but I am such a dog person I would feel bad if I did.

Not that I like the neighbors enough to worry about them feeling bad if I did, but I am such a dog person I would feel bad if I did. We have wildlife all the time here at night and even in daylight hours. And I've had self centered neighbors that let their dogs run, dig etc. on everyone's property. Needless to say I feel if they're not where they should be and growl at me they're fair game and I'm a dog owner who loves his dog and would kill to protect him as I would my own family but, have NO patience for self centered people. Now, about the other critters, if they approach me in a manner that is aggressive, there dead. Thankfully the coyotes and other wildlife I have encountered on my property are more afraid of me then I am of them and they high tail it when they see me. No! I don't look like Sasquatch, I'm 5'7" 150 lbs. and walk with a limp and love all animals......well most except gophers, moles, feral cats and monkeys. I must just have a look about me because they never stay long.

Fortunately I have never run into any of the larger carnivores but that coyote was definitely not scared of me.

Fortunately I have never run into any of the larger carnivores but that coyote was definitely not scared of me. A Coyote will probably not attack you cause there pretty docile when alone and not in a pack of course unless their rabib, starved or cornered which in that case sadly it calls for a weapon in hand. I don't mean to sound uncaring or kill happy, cause I'm not. But, I've witnessed enough and put up with more than enough to let it to continue to control my quality of living. And I'm one if I've stepped on a lizard or frog feel so bad it upsets me for sometime. I also believe that we are the custodians of all of god's creatures and should never mistreat them. But, to we also must defend ourselves and our families from harm.

G'evenin'All, very interesting the wildest it gets here is fearless foxes confronting you walking the dog or out of control pit bull types & the occasional mouse trespassing, See'Ya'Guys & Gals.

I much prefer any kind of critter on the property to that of any human bi-pedal variety of beast.

Encountered many coyotes and a couple black bears in my time. All were trying to get away from me as rapidly as possible whether I was armed or not; however, I was told one very credible encounter to the contrary. I'd say Ron nailed it on that one. Something wrong with that critter.
My best advice would be to buy one of those little metal outdoor back porch fireplaces, the ones which will only burn a little fire. These critters have an adverse sense to the smell of smoke. It signals danger. I'm not saying you have to vigilantly maintain a fire at all times. Just a few times may drive the local critters away, you get to kick back, enjoy a smoke by the fire and enjoy life. That's a win-win.
Best of luck.

10Furlongs nailed it for me. I spend a lot of time in desert country with a lot of mountain lion activity. Always a nice fire going by dusk to sit by while smoking a pipe and sipping some Islay or tequila. They won't come near all those smells. One of my favorite things in life. I simulate the experience when at home with a chiminea out on the back patio.
