I’m still working through trying new blends. Just got a big hall from cbid and I couldn’t help but pop the tens that I got. Plan to try all of them over the next week.
My question is, I now have about 6 tins that are all open that will probably take me a little bit to get through them. Are they OK in the open and tins or should I jarred them ?

Short answer: Yes, Andy.
Long answer: Yes indeed, Andy.
The tobacco would probably be fine for a while, but jars and lids are inexpensive and readily available.

Jars are cheap and good tobacco is not. A wet blend can take more time sitting in an open tin but over all, unless you plan to smoke a lot of bowls in a week or two at most, jar it up and protect your investment.

I generally let my fresh tinned tobacco sit in its tin until it starts drying out on it's own. Then it goes into jars and often forgot about for a month or more.

Jars are your friend. The folks at the local Ace Hardware think I grow an enormous garden given the numbers of jars I'm buying; I don't disabuse them of that notion.

Thanks folks. Jars it is. I have 10 pounds of McCleland #5100 put back in large jars but wish I would have put it all back in much smaller jars now.

I don’t have that much in large jars, but what I do has aged a few years... I am thinking that when I do crack the large jars, that I will immediately put them in smaller jars and get a mason jar vacuum to rid the jars of air.

Mark, when your ready to open a large jar, break it down to small wide mouth jars. They work out perfect for tobacco’s in my rotation. Have fun, it’s worth the money and effort 👍

6 tins open is a good start.....
The more you open the more you will want jars. Unless you are a jimney err chimney.

I've about 30 tins all opened, none jarred. But I do things differently here. The tin is my jar.

Six years ago I had an insane amount of tins open. I'm down to a dozen now in the rotation partly as a result of previously having an insane amount of open tins. It was a hell of a lot of fun but I've developed go to smokes and know what I like now. Damn glad I put back a good lot of McClelland when I had the opportunity.

Burp the tins and they should hold for months👍 eh? Do I put it over my shoulder and pat it? With the lid on tight press the center rubber like lid and gently open a small portion of the lid. Press the center of lid to let out extra air, close lid fast and tight......it’s burped👍

The only blend I leave in the tin for a while in SG FVF. All others go into a jar asap.........

One way to solve this problem is to smoke ONE TIN AT A TIME !! This will allow you to truly LEARN about a blend and then you can move to the next. Since your in this for the long haul, what's the hurry?

I've about 30 tins all opened, none jarred. But I do things differently here. The tin is my jar. The 1/4 turn round screw top tins like Orlik, I can see doing for a few weeks, but to do the same with a square tin would result in rehydrating the patient. But then agan, I live in a pretty dry climate...good for firearms, not so much for forgotten tobacco.

I've opened a few tins in my time and forgot to jar them soon after... they had dried significantly after about a year but were still quite good - yet nowhere near as good as if they had been jar-aged with moisture retained.

Smoking one tin at a time has never been my manner of pipe smoking, as a varietal rotation enhances my appreciation of one blend to another and never gets dull or boring.

One way to solve this problem is to smoke ONE TIN AT A TIME !! This will allow you to truly LEARN about a blend and then you can move to the next. Since your in this for the long haul, what's the hurry? This is exactly how I do it. I keep my daily supplies in a tackle box, which holds 3 tins and 3 of the ~3" tall jars in the bottom.
I rotate between the 6, swapping out as each is emptied. I usually have two larger jars of bulk Boswells and a BCA blend off to the side, but I'll consistently smoke a tin that is almost empty just to move onto something else. If I finish a tin and I wish I had more, I will order immediately....if not, I just move on.
The only thing that has longevity in my box is a jar of Elizabethan....I like it, but my palate can't smoke it too often...too spicy!
But, I'd agree if you have many tins open, it is probably best to jar it.

atison I have about 10 open tin's at this time. Four of them are the 1.5oz to 2.0oz round tin's with plastic lids, and the other six are the round Dunhill type 1.75oz tin's. The garage this time of year is cool and approximately 40% RH. The tobacco will keep for sometime in the round tin's with the weather we're having, and the smaller tin's with plastic lids are doing fine over the last couple of months (with proper burping of the lids). I keep check from time to time on the smaller tin's, and their moisture level is fine. In time, I will most likely transfer to the glass Kerr jars or the empty Bonne Maman jam jars (the latter is similar to the round Dunhill tin's, in that their lids have a similar rubbery tacky type of substance on the inside of the lid, that create a seal against the glass rim when turned closed). For myself, the tobacco blends have appeared to maintain consistency. Unless you've received samples in plastic baggies from your favorite online or local B&M retailer, your pipe tobacco's should be ok for a bit (depending on your weather and RH). However, as has been mentioned above by other pipers, storage in the one-pint wide mouth Kerr type jars is advisable. Just make sure that you have a good seating of the lid prior to twisting close the outside ring, and try to store in a dark area such as a chest of drawers, closet, or even a gun cabinet
