I've had numerous and conducted multiple unscientific experiments. When I shaved my briar collection from approximately 90 to 12, the 9mm where the only ones I kept. My current remaining briar collection consists of six Sav 320 KS author, four Sav 616 KS billiards and two Stanwell 185 eggs. I can highly recommend all of these as starting points to anybody looking to take the plunge.
One common thread with all these pipes is they are big bowls. I never found a smaller bowl 9mm pipe which drew to my liking. Second, they all came from across the pond as availability in the States is somewhat limited. Last, compared to others, they were all extremely affordable.
Filters are equally important to pipe with 9mm. I've tried most and the only two I've found which will not restrict draw are Stanwell charcoal and White Elephant meerschaum filters. Others are lesser quality or garbage action IMHO. I totally get the Sav balsa filter love. It provides a great dry smoke; however, I don't have moisture issues which appears to be the primary benefit to the filter.
I normally mix these with my meers, four unfiltered Bakis and one Altinok, and can no longer detect any difference in draw between them. There's a lot to be said for proper cadence and solid 9mm pipes are great educators.
Perhaps not everybody's cup of tea but thought I'd put it out there for discussion. As always YMMV. Filters for cobs are another discussion for another thread but feel free to toss them in the mix.

I love my 9mm pipes. I got a Mr brog one and it came with an unnamed filter in it. When I smoked that bowl I could taste (yes, taste) the flavours in the smoke.
I bought a load of charcoal filters but they restrict the draw too much for me. I haven't tried the meerschaum filters yet, but I believe @chico has had the same experience as you, @10furlongs.
I often smoke without the filter but I'd like to get a filter that works the way that Mr brog filter did. That was a terrific smoke.

My uncle Joe swears by filtered pipes. I just don’t dig them. To each his own right?

I enjoy my 9mm filter briars the most when I use the White Elephant meerschaum filters. They were abundant and cheap when I lived in Europe. To this day they are the “ ONLY “ 9mm filters I use, I notice a big difference in quality of smoking pleasure. I’ll go out of my way to hunt them down.

I enjoy the Savinelli balsa filters in my 320s on occasion. Not every time though or every blend. Just the ones that I think will smoke a little damp. Mostly that is only an issue if I am impatient and unwilling to let such tobacco dry out a bit.

I only have a couple of 9mm pipes, but the one I like best is the Stanwell Hans Christian Andersen cutty. I've tried Savinelli balsa filters in it, and Vauen charcoal. I prefer the charcoal by far, but I have noticed they are only good for 3 smokes. After that they start tasting pretty rank and bitter. Not sure if that's the expected lifespan of charcoal filters, or if the Vauen ones are worse than others. I'll definitely check out the meerschaum ones, in any case.
I should also say that the draw is slightly more restricted than than not using one at all, but it works for me (maybe I tend to pack light normally). I enjoy so many more blends with a 9mm filter than I did before. And some blends that I already enjoyed I appreciate much more, especially GH flakes and anything with Perique. I've read that filters decrease the flavors, but for me it's just the opposite - they actually reveal more flavors.

I always fold up a pipe cleaner and stuff it in just to draw in moisture. I figure it is about the same as running a pipe filter through while smoking.
I also use balsa in my filtered pipes. It certainly isn't necessary, but I enjoy the dry smoke.
I can't even imagine have 90 pipes!

Vauen makes a great 9mm pipes. I use balsa, but I cut "filters" myself and I make them a bit narrower than Savinelli does. BC is another good 9mm pipe manufacturer.
